Why is my Mini Pinscher shaking, trembling, and showing signs of pain?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Maya. I recommend that she sees her veterinarian. Neck and back pain are common in small breed dogs. This is very painful and can cause shaking, panting and a reluctance to jump. Her veterinarian can detect this on her exam or another problem if that may be the case. In the meantime, keep her quiet. I would recommend taking William to a vet for a good exam. My concern would be that William could possible have neck pain. I would recommend restricting his activity and limiting the activity that seems to stimulate the pain. If you walk him I would start using a harness to allow no pressure to be around his neck. If this is new behavior for Louie, I would advise to take him into the vet today. That posture indicated pain in normal dogs. If a tumor is present, it could impede the nerve which could also be responsible for an abnormal position but I would most suspect pain as the culprit. The doctor will check his neck and back for signs of discomfort and prescribe medication to make Louie feel better. I hope this helps!

Bailey most likely has a bulging intervertebral disc in her cervical spine. Theses don't show on plain X-rays. The muscle spasms contribute to the painful episodes. Usually these dogs are not lame though occasionally they may hold up a front paw from pain radiating down the leg. I recommend pain medication with a muscle relaxer in addition you can use moist heat on her neck and shoulder, then some gentle massage to reduce the muscle spasms. I treat these dogs with laser and acupuncture to relive the symptoms. Bailey needs to rest, no jumping and use a harness to walk her not a neck collar. Generally as the disc heals over several weeks to a month the painful episodes go away. Your chiropractic veterinarian should be able to help with her pain. There could be an orthopedic issue (such as a fracture or ligament tear) causing discomfort or perhaps abdominal or back pain. May sounds quite uncomfortable! A hunched back stance and trembling can often occur with some back conditions, such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), discospondylitis or fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE). May should be examined by her vet and assessed for the presence of neurological deficits as well as the location of the pain, as this will help to guide her treatment. Until you are able to take May to her vet, keep her confined to a very small room with no furniture or to a crate. She should not be running, jumping, or playing because this could exacerbate any back condition or injury. Do not give her any medication - there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs.

I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference.
