My dog has severe IBD and is vomiting after eating. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 67 lbs

Hi , my dog has been diagnosed with ibd and he is being treated with zd food ,metronidazole, cisapride,prednisone,Prilosec ,cerenia, and clavamox, for phemonia, but his ibd is becoming severe, throw up after eating most of the time.what can I do ? Thank you Bill

Poor Baron! I'm sorry to hear that he's having so much trouble. It is indeed surprising that things are getting worse and he is vomiting so frequently on his current combination of medications, which makes me concerned that something more serious may be going on. I'm not sure how his IBD was originally diagnosed, but if he has not had an exploratory surgery with biopsies of his stomach and intestines, I would strongly recommend that at this point - he may actually have something more serious, such as GI lymphoma or some other type of stomach or intestinal cancer. An endoscopy with biopsies would also be an option, if this is available in your area.

If the Clavamox was added just recently, that might be the reason for the vomiting, but I would expect Cerenia to stop that (is he still on Cerenia?). Make sure he is eating before you give him any pills and check with your vet if he can give you some additional meds for the vomiting (metoclopramide) as well as possibly changing the Clavamox to a different antibiotic that doesn't cause as much nausea.

I think it is fine that your vet tried a conservative approach initially. However since that hasn't worked now I think he needs to go back in for a recheck. I would recommend at this point definitely doing the x-ray and a fecal examination to check for intestinal parasites. At the very least Archie will need some medication to help with the nausea and vomiting.

I think that sounds fine! There is always a fair bit of trial and error in managing inflammatory bowel disease. Every dog is a little different, and we always strive to get the symptoms under control with what ever combination of meds that work. Omeprazole works to reduce stomach acid, and Metoclopramide works to improve GI motility. Keep talking to your vet, and let them know how the new meds are working. And, if there is any concern about the new food bag, you could always purchase a new bag, in case there is a bad batch. Best of luck!

My dog has IBD. Why is he vomiting bile after switching foods?

I'm not sure this vomiting is related to the new food. One would expect that the colon and the stomach should be one the same page since they are all part of the same tract. So if a food upsets the stomach, it is likely it will upset the colon. The fact that the KO fixed the colon (ie the poop issues) but now Jack is vomiting is not expected and is unusual. I don't recommend to switch the food unless your vet advises it. Instead, call your vet. They may recommend steroids or another medical treatment for the IBD. They may also recommend an abdominal ultrasound to rule out a cancer like GI lymphoma. If you do want to try a food, I recommend a hydrolyzed diet since it will diagnose all types of adverse food reactions. The formula I recommend is Royal Canin Ultamino. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Patsy. Has she had an abdominal ultrasound yet? I will typically recommend this as well as a gastrointestinal specific blood panel prior to biopsies. I assess cobalamin and folate levels as well pancreatic values such as TLI and PLI. These results can help to guide treatment. I hope this information helps!

My cat is vomiting, not eating. Could it be IBD? What are next steps?

I'm sorry to hear that Mercedes is sick. If IBD or GI lymphoma is suspected the next steps may be ultrasound or even biopsy. Biopsy is needed to confirm the diagnosis of IBD. However, I will frequently treat if it is strongly suspected on ultrasound. If IBD is confirmed it's worth doing a trial of a prescription GI diet. Although a/d is a good recovery diet it is probably not the best one to use as a maintenance diet if IBD is suspected. It would also be worth giving your veterinarian a call to see if they can give a Cerenia injection. This will help to resolve the vomiting and can be continued if necessary. Vitamin B12 injections can also be helpful when a cat is experiencing GI distress and will be needed if IBD is confirmed. My dog is vomiting constantly and not eating after vet visit. What's next?

The bilirubin is a bit high, as is the ALP (alkaline phosphatase) but neither of these values is super specific in terms of what the cause or the best treatment is. We can see the ALP be elevated with stress, age, and sometimes even normal cell regeneration within the liver. The bilirubin can be slightly elevated when the blood sample is what we call "hemolyzed," which can sometimes happen when blood is spun down for a blood test to be run. Therefore, if he is still showing symptoms of illness, I would echo what Dr Ana said; it may be time to consider imaging. Either X-rays or an abdominal ultrasound maybe helpful in identifying the problem and therefore identifying the best way to treat it. Take him back to the vet if he's still having troubles, as he probably is in need of some more fluids as well. My IBD cat is vomiting, has diarrhea, and won't eat. Is she okay?

This probably just means that her IBD is no longer being controlled on the current medications and she just needs further management of her condition. I highly recommend that you have reevaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. At the very least they can make sure to treat her symptoms so that you can get her to feel better. Why is my St. Bernard vomiting bile, losing hair, not eating?

I would recommend a broad spectrum deworming to see if that helps. Then, if it hasn’t been done yet I would run some blood work. If that is normal then I would encourage you to have her stomach and intestinal tract biopsied. Are you planning to spay her? If so I would recommend discussing the possibility of obtaining biopsy samples at the time of spay. This is something I have done frequently.
