My dog with IBD is vomiting after new food bag. Is vet's plan right?

I'm not sure this vomiting is related to the new food. One would expect that the colon and the stomach should be one the same page since they are all part of the same tract. So if a food upsets the stomach, it is likely it will upset the colon. The fact that the KO fixed the colon (ie the poop issues) but now Jack is vomiting is not expected and is unusual. I don't recommend to switch the food unless your vet advises it. Instead, call your vet. They may recommend steroids or another medical treatment for the IBD. They may also recommend an abdominal ultrasound to rule out a cancer like GI lymphoma. If you do want to try a food, I recommend a hydrolyzed diet since it will diagnose all types of adverse food reactions. The formula I recommend is Royal Canin Ultamino. Poor Baron! I'm sorry to hear that he's having so much trouble. It is indeed surprising that things are getting worse and he is vomiting so frequently on his current combination of medications, which makes me concerned that something more serious may be going on. I'm not sure how his IBD was originally diagnosed, but if he has not had an exploratory surgery with biopsies of his stomach and intestines, I would strongly recommend that at this point - he may actually have something more serious, such as GI lymphoma or some other type of stomach or intestinal cancer. An endoscopy with biopsies would also be an option, if this is available in your area.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He is adorable! I think that a course of prednisone could potentially be added to better control the IBD so it has an all day effect. Another thing that can be tried if your veterinarian (who knows all his medical history) thinks is a good idea is changing him to another IBD type diet such as Royal canin ultamino. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Patsy. Has she had an abdominal ultrasound yet? I will typically recommend this as well as a gastrointestinal specific blood panel prior to biopsies. I assess cobalamin and folate levels as well pancreatic values such as TLI and PLI. These results can help to guide treatment. I hope this information helps!

Generally more frequently feeding solves bilious vomiting. If he won't eat more than twice a day, it's fine to mix in something to entice him and pumpkin puree is a fine choice. A little rice or oatmeal could also do the trick. Just watch for worsening of the IBD when you add in another food and don't use any food he's had before. My other advice would be that if he's vomiting and it's not after a long stretch of not eating, it's probably related to his IBD or something else entirely rather than BVS, so let your vet know so they can continue testing/looking/thinking. If IBD is suspected, we should always try out a limited ingredient hypoallergenic diet (such as rabbit, venison, or kangaroo), for a minimum of 8 weeks with NO other treats or table scraps. However, since Chi's appetite is not the greatest, it will be a challenge to find a hypoallergenic diet that she likes. It sounds like the medications that were prescribed are appropriate for the suspected illness. Carafate is a gastroprotectant that is used to minimize gastric ulcers - it should not worsen diarrhea symptoms. Two other suggestions which I would discuss with your vet: 1) try a different type of anti-diarrhea antibiotic, such as tylosin. 2) consider weekly treatments of vitamin B12, as many dogs with IBD are B12-deficient. 3) try again with steroid therapy such as prednisolone, or try a different immunosuppresant such as cyclosporine. Hi there. If she seems to be doing better now and the vomiting has resolved, it should be fine to continue with the current plan of giving her small amounts of i/d for the next 2-3 days before gradually switching back to her regular diet. If she's still vomiting despite the Pepcid and bland diet, then I would say she definitely needs a vet visit at this point to determine what is causing her symptoms. She may have an intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, or some type of systemic illness like liver or kidney disease. Your veterinarian can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.
