My dog has a serious eye issue. Should I wait for the specialist?

It looks like pigmentation of the third eyelid. It may be normal but it may be melanoma (cancerous); those are the two most common reasons for this presentation. The biopsy is probably needed although an experienced ophthalmologist may be able to tell what it is just by looking at it. These are your options: 1. Do nothing but monitor it until the appointment with the ophthalmologist. If it seems to get worse try to get in to see them on emergency or let your regular vet examine it. 2. Go to your regular vet now to see what they think after seeing it (+/- on the biopsy) 3. Try to find another ophthalmologist in the area so you can get an appointment sooner. Hello, if Starsky were to have a corneal ulcer, this is a serious condition that requires immediate treatment by a vet. Most ulcers that are treated promptly improve with basic supportive care such as pain meds, eye drops, and potentially serum drops (your vet may take a blood sample from your dog, spin it down to remove red blood cells, and send the remaining serum with you to be putting drops in Starsky's eye). However, if you postpone his vet visit, the ulcer could get larger and deeper, could even perforate the cornea and cause permanent blindness, or require a corneal graft surgery to heal, or even require complete removal of the eye. It is definitely in the best interest of both Starsky and you (from a financial perspective) to get his eye treated ASAP. Hope this helps!

I can't tell you exactly what is wrong with his eye, it could be more than one thing but it is an absolute emergency, you need to explain that to your vet and he should see you right away even if he does not have an apointment for you today, if he does not agree to see you , you need to take Milo to a different vet, either way he needs to be seen today.

In some breeds the eyes can get a little red with excitement, when they are tired, etc. As long as Olaf's eyes do not seem painful: excessive blinking, holding an eye closed, excessive tearing, yellow or green discharge or rubbing them it is fine to wait until your appointment next week. Your vet should be able to get her started on insulin and regulated. A specialist is not needed for that. The cataracts are already there and will not worsen in the next month. Cataracts will not resolve with diabetic treatment (insulin), they have to be removed/dissolved surgically. I would be more worried about the diabetes staying unregulated for the next month than I would be about the cataracts. You can always call the MVRC and ask them to call you if they have a cancellation so you can get in sooner for an appointment; they may be able to do that. You can also see if there is another specialist in the area that can see you sooner.

This is an emergency, your vet should see you right away, if he refuses you have to take him to another vet that will see him today. cloudiness of the eye is a very serious symptom, there are several eye condition that could cause that but it is important to start the treatment urgently, otherwise permanent eye damage could occur.
