Should my dog take both Sentinel Spectrum and Nexgard for parasites?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I prescribe Nexgard and Sentinel together multiple times per day. I haven’t heard of any reactions. Just like people some dogs can react to certain medications. If you google any medication for human or animals you will find stories of adverse reactions. No drug doesn’t come without side effects. To be safe give the drugs 2 days apart the first time you give them. I have some clients that give one the 1st of the month and the other mid month. Personally I haven’t heard of any reactions going the 2 together. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Hi there! Yes, Advantix would be a very reasonable choice to use along with Sentinel Spectrum. You could also use Nexgard or Bravecto for tick coverage, if you prefer an oral medication instead of topical.

We typically recommend waiting 3 weeks between product changes but if she is miserable, you are probably OK to give it to her now. Just be sure you are home to monitor her for any possible reactions. It is certainly not too much to use a Seresto collar with Sentinel! In my experience, Sentinel alone is not sufficient for proper flea control, but is great for heartworm and intestinal parasite prevention. The Seresto collar will prevent ticks and fleas, which is quite important. To answer your question, yes, use both! :-)

While there's technically no reason that these two medications can't be used together, they are both heartworm preventatives - so there's quite a bit over overlap in what they do, and both should not be needed at the same time. If your pup is currently on Interceptor and you want to add a second medication to cover fleas, I would recommend using something like Nexgard or Bravecto - these are flea/tick meds only, so you wouldn't be treating her unnecessarily for heartworms with two different meds.

Yes, you can give both products at the same time and Charlie will likely do fine. If you want to be extra cautious, separate them by two days. Neither product had activity against ticks. If ticks are a concern where you live, you can switch the products to something like Simparica for fleas and ticks and the Interceptor for heartworms and intestinal worms. Hi and thanks for your post! Yes this is okay. Sentinel does not kill adult fleas, just the eggs. Sentinel also does not prevent ticks as you mentioned in your question. Advantix does, however. I hope this helps!
