My dog had seizures after eating roots. What toxic plants cause this?

That depends on what type of root tubers Maya is eating. Many types of flower bulbs are toxic to dogs. Identify what species of plant she is eating so that you can find out if there is a potential toxin exposure. I have not heard of nor could I find any reference to poison oak causing neurologic signs in dogs. I would recommend a couple of things. First, make sure you have the plant identified correctly. You might take some of it to your local garden center to have them help identify it for you. You might also look at this webiste. https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control I would also investigate if there is a possibility of anything being sprayed on the plant or if Midget was chewing on anything else. Neurological signs can be very worrisome, so I would certainly do some more investigation to get to the bottom of things. While the hibiscus is toxic to dogs, according to the ASCPA, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, and anorexia. It does not cause seizures, but if Mia is having seizures, she should see a vet right away. Causes of seizures include low blood sugar, certain toxins, trauma to the head, liver disease, kidney failure, and brain tumors. She should be seen by a vet to determine the cause of her seizures so they can be treated. If Mia seizures again before you can seek vet care: - Don't put your hands near her mouth - Keep some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle to spray on the pads of the feet for cooling - Monitor her at all times during the seizure to ensure that she cannot hurt himself by crashing into furniture, etc - If the seizure continues for more than 5 minutes, seek emergency care immediately

I suggest you go to your local agricultural extension office and ask them to visit your place to determine what kind of plants grow there and whether they are toxic. If the extension office won;t come, then maybe a gardener or similar person can help, You can also take good photos of the plants (bark, leaves, flowers, fruit) and try to match them via one of the browsers on your computer. (Type: "Reverse image search" into your browser and that should bring up how and where).

It is possible it may be food related - certain liver issues such as shunts can cause build up of chemicals in the blood causing seizures after food. This would need specific liver blood tests and possibly ultrasound to identify and if present can be managed with diet and medication for the most part although some may require surgery. Certain chemicals and molds in food can also trigger seizures

I am sorry for not being more precise in my initial answer. Herbicides and fertilizers usually cause signs of gastroenteritis ( vomiting, diarrhea, nausea) when ingested. They are considered not very toxic to dogs (with some exceptions to fertilizers containing high level of iron) and they definitely have not been associated with brain tumor development. What is more, the concerns about safety of these products are only related to chronic exposure. I really do not think that being in contact (or even ingesting) some of the product that was not watered in could cause brain tumor.
