My dog is eating roots or bulbs. Are they poisonous to my dog?

I am afraid many toxic plants can cause that, so it is not possible to tell you what kind of plant that was. A photo of the plant, leaves, flower and root would help with the identification. Best either stop access of your dog to this plant (fence it) or remove the plant so he cannot eat more of it.

Yes tulip bulbs are indeed to toxic to dogs and cats. Signs of intoxication are vomiting, depression, diarrhea, hypersalivation. So your dog clearly has been poisoned. With large ingestions, more severe symptoms such as an increase in heart rate, changes in respiration, and difficulty breathing may be seen. Should you notice your dog having breathing problems or should he appear very ill you should contact your vet or take him to a Pet ER. Generally it is not life threatening in a healthy dog, however every dog is different and there is no guarantee.

Lilies are not toxic to dogs although they can cause stomach upset. All parts of the lily plant are quite toxic to cats and cause kidney failure, but dogs seem to be resistant. If Zoey vomits or develops diarrhea you should see your veterinarian.

Hyacinth bulbs and the entire tulip family aren't extremely toxic to dogs, but if consumed in large enough quantities they can cause GI upset and even some cardiorespiratory changes. In this case, if only one bulb was chew (not even swallowed) and you have yet to see any clinical signs, you probably shouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. If you want to be really careful, you can certainly go to the vet and start Cali on a decontamination protocol. This would certainly be the safest option but might be unnecessary. Inducing vomiting at this point in time would be pointless as the stomach has already moved anything that was eaten down into the intestines. An immediate check up is required as tulip bulbs can result in severe toxicity. There is no antidote to this type of intoxication, so treatment beyond that is essentially supportive, including hospitalisation. I would avoid any lactation until signs are not resolved. Milk replacement can be given. Please make sure Chloe is getting enough food so she’s not hungry, If she’s very active she may need three meals daily. If she eats very quickly at each meal and finishes it all right away then increase the amount at each feeding so she’s not as hungry at the next meal. Adding a tablespoon of plain canned pumpkin to each feeding will increase the fiber and make passing the stools easier. Then I would give her plenty of toys to chew on and play with, and teach her to fetch so she isn’t as interested in chewing and eating the roots. I would also,limit her time in that area so she can’t eat so many roots. She should outgrow this in a month or two.
