My 6-year-old dog had multiple seizures. What causes dog seizures?

That sounds scary! Teddy may have had a seizure. Syncope or a low blood sugar episode are also possible. Teddy needs to be examined by his veterinarian today if possible. Poor Chubbs. Seizures in dogs can be caused by a primary brain lesion, infectious disease, underlying liver problems (hepatic encephalopathy), metabolic imbalances (sodium), or in most cases they are idiopathic (no underlying cause). Chubbs needs baseline bloodwork to rule out most underlying causes of this. Once those are ruled out, then the vet will place Chubbs on anti-seizure medication to help manage his seizures and prevent permanent brain damage. It sounds like Chubbs needs to be regulated right away, especially if he is having more than 1 seizure a month and/or they are lasting for more than 2-3 minutes at a time. I would be very concerned with Izzy having this many seizures in such a short period of time. Young, small breed dogs can suffer from a condition called a shunt. With this disease the liver is unable to filter out toxins like it normally would. When this happens and the levels of certain enzymes get too high they affect the brain and cause seizures. This happens more frequently after a meal. I would recommend having Izzy checked out by your vet. They will likely run a blood test to check her liver enzymes and a test called bile acids to see how well the liver is working. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this in your young pup! Hopefully you can get a diagnosis and start managing her seizures soon.

At 7 months of age, I recommend a visit to your veterinarian to check bloodwork and make sure nothing abnormal is found. Idiopathic epilepsy, or seizures for an unknown reason, can develop at this age, but we want to make sure we aren't missing anything else. This might be the only seizure Jerry ever has, or there could be more. Write down the information about this event, and mark it on the calendar so you remember exactly when it happened. If there are more, then you veterinarian will need to take steps to properly diagnose and treat the condition.

Poor Oliver! He really needs to see a veterinarian as an examination, blood work, and imaging (like X-rays) will be necessary to determine the cause of seizures. Unfortunately cancer is a common cause of seizures in an older dog. Medication can be prescribed to reduce the seizure activity and to give Oliver a better quality of life. I always recommend blood work to start with in any dog that started having seizures. There are a few things that could be diagnosed on blood work that could cause seizures, such as liver disease, kidney disease, electrolyte abnormalities, and infection. If the blood work is normal. Your vet will likely recommend that you continue to monitor Harley for seizure activity. Some dogs will have a seizure or two early in their life and never again. But some develop epilepsy that needs to start on medications.
