Why does my dog bark in his crate every night? Separation anxiety?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I agree with you. This is possibly separation anxiety which is actually way more common than people think. While there are behavioral medications that may help, I still prefer more behavioral modifications such as increasing the frequency of those times that you are separated to get her more used to it but more importantly, start rewarding her for when she behaves well when left alone. You can do this with praise and of course treats. If this does not work, there are medications that can be used for this purpose which your veterinarian may be able to prescribe if deemed useful at that time. Good luck and have a good night!

Absolutely. I recommend crating both dogs when one is crated. That should stop this behavior. The crate is supposed to be like a den or safe spot and having another dog barking outside the crate certainly would upset the dog in the crate. I would recommend feeding her dinner in her crate and making this a place where she wants to go and is comfortable for her. I would make sure she has plenty of room to move around in as well. You can try using the Adaptil products to see if this calms her down and relaxes her. It can take some time for a dog to become crate trained but the key is to make it an enjoyable place that she wants to be in. It sounds as if your puppy is developing serparstion anxiety. The good news is that she is still young and you have time to correct her behaviors so she can live a long happy life! I would recommend first commiting to crate training your dog. This will help prevent her from destroying things and keep her safe so she doesn't get into anything that could harm him. Crate training can take a few weeks but once she is used to the crate she will begin to feel safe there. I would also recommend taking her on a fast paced walk before you have to crate her to help drain some of his nervous energy. You can also try giving her a chew toy like a kong in the crate to keep her distracted. If these tactics do not work I would recommend talking to your vet about starting her on an anti anxiety medication until she becomes more accustomed to her crate. I hope this helps. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Percy. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian to discuss his behavior. He may be developing separation anxiety. This can be a difficult condition and is easier to manage when intervention starts early. The veterinarian will examine him and make sure that physically he is healthy. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Jasper is very young and likely lonely. Barking in the crate at 7 weeks is very normal. You can try putting a blanket over the crate to create a "den-like" environment. If he doesn't chew up toys you can place a large stuffed animal for his to snuggle up with. Still try to hold your ground and ignore him. You can also consider putting the crate in another room and everyone closes their bedroom doors until he is fully crate trained.
