My dog's scrotum is painful and looks infected. What's wrong?

I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

Poor guy...that does look uncomfortable. It may be infected, but I would suspect a discharge at the incision or a fever, lethargy. It is more likely that this is a scrotal hematoma. These typically do resolve in their own, but it can take weeks. Keep his activity level as low as possible to discourage more swelling, continue the anti inflammatory medication, make sure he cannot bite or lick it by using a “cone” if needed. It can provide some relief if he will allow you to do a cold compress on the area. Try wrapping an ice pack with cloth and apply to the area for 15 minutes..three times daily. If Tomy sat in something irritating, it may have lead to him licking and chewing at his scrotum. I would recommend getting a plastic cone and placing this around his head and using an ointment such as Sentry Wound Cream which can be found online or at your local PetCo. If the wound does not improve or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Tomy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! It's a bit difficult to see what is going on in the picture but if some pink tissue is protruding from the skin, you should have him evaluated immediately. Without adequate care tonight and an Elizabethan collar, he may do a lot more damage to the area by licking it. I would get him seen right away. Your vet can evaluate what is going on and then advise you on how this condition needs to be treated. An open wound can become contaminated and infected rather quickly and if not treated right away may lead to bigger problems soon. Good luck with Kramer. I hope you can seek care right away for him. If you are unable to do that, I would make sure that he has an Elizabethan collar on so he cannot lick the area and make it worse.

I would recommend taking him to a vet as soon as possible. It looks like in the picture a hole has formed in the scrotum. This could be a ruptures abscess,trauma, neoplasia or parasite. The testicles need a exam along with the prostate. I would recommend a elizabethan collar to prevent licking until you make it to the vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet. I am very sorry that Joey’s scrotum is red. Without a picture it is difficult to know what the problem may be, but I will offer you some general advice to help make him more comfortable. Apply a cool compress to the area for a few minutes at a time over the next few days Place an e-collar on Joey so he does not bite or chew at the area and cause it to become infected or inflamed Bathing the area with warm water and leaving open to dry out If you notice pain, enlargement of the testicles or scrotum sac, change in colour , especially deepening red, blue or purple, discharge or bleeding I would take Joey to the veterinarian immediately. There could be a torsion or twist in the testicles causing the redness or swelling. This is a very painful condition and a medical emergency. If the redness does not go down in the next few hours I would also advice taking Joey to the vet for an examination. It could be skin infection, skin parasite or an issue with a structure within the testicles or scrotum. The vet will be able to diagnose and make a treatment plan with you.
