My dog's scrotum is red, black, and has open wounds. What to do?

Place an [e-collar](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/well-and-good-e-collar) (cone) on him right away to prevent further licking or scratching. If the wound is superficial, I suggest gently cleansing the area with a diluted betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Applying a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for five minutes at a time may provide some relief from itching and discomfort. Afterwards, dry the area throughly. If there is no sign of improvement in a few days or if your dog develops a fever, loses his appetite, start [vomiting](https://www.petcoach.co/article/vomiting-in-dogs) and/or having [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/article/diarrhea-in-dogs) then have him physically examined by your veterinarian right away. Additional symptoms that should also be addressed by your veterinarian include redness, swelling, discharge or bleeding.

Black scrotum/testicles is not a good sign especially if wounds are present. The black color often means that the skin is dying. I suggest you have Tommy looked at by your vet. Hello there and thank you for posting your picture and concern about Choppies! From the picture you sent, it looks like Choppies has caused quite a bit of irritation and inflammation on his scrotum. I would pick up a plastic cone from the pet store to put around his head so that he is not able to lick this and then get him in to see your veterinarian for an examination. There are multiple possible causes of this, which include thermal burn, inflammation of structures inside the scrotum causing Choppies to lick due to the discomfort, infection or behavioral. The first thing you need to do is put a cone collar on him to keep him from continuing to lick the skin. He has scrotal dermatitis (an infection of the scrotal skin) and no matter what you use to treat It with, if he just continues to lick, it will not get better. So, get the cone collar ASAP and then apply this Vetericyn spray (linked below) to the affected area 2-3 times per day. If after about 5=7 days of doing this, it is not better than you need to have him checked by your vet. I am very sorry that Joey’s scrotum is red. Without a picture it is difficult to know what the problem may be, but I will offer you some general advice to help make him more comfortable. Apply a cool compress to the area for a few minutes at a time over the next few days Place an e-collar on Joey so he does not bite or chew at the area and cause it to become infected or inflamed Bathing the area with warm water and leaving open to dry out If you notice pain, enlargement of the testicles or scrotum sac, change in colour , especially deepening red, blue or purple, discharge or bleeding I would take Joey to the veterinarian immediately. There could be a torsion or twist in the testicles causing the redness or swelling. This is a very painful condition and a medical emergency. If the redness does not go down in the next few hours I would also advice taking Joey to the vet for an examination. It could be skin infection, skin parasite or an issue with a structure within the testicles or scrotum. The vet will be able to diagnose and make a treatment plan with you. Poor Timmy! That looks very painful. It's difficult to say for sure from just the picture but it appears that Timmy's scrotum and testicles are infected or even that the scrotum has ruptured. Tummy needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away as he will likely need surgery and prescription antibiotics to treat this issue. He will need to wear an e-collar to prevent him from licking the area. He will also need prescription pain medication as this looks very painful. This may be a skin infection of the scrotum, or an infection of the testicles. This is not uncommon to see in unneutered males, but can be somewhat difficult to treat. Unfortunately, without examining Ace it's not possible to diagnose the specific problem and recommend treatment. It's best if you can take Ace to a vet within the next day or two, so they can have a good look and recommend the best treatment. For now, I recommend cleaning the scrotum with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) twice a day in case the scrotum is infected. Avoid rubbing or squeezing the area, because this can cause more damage than good. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.
