What's this hole on my dog's scrotum? He won't stop licking it!

Hello there and thank you for posting your picture and concern about Choppies! From the picture you sent, it looks like Choppies has caused quite a bit of irritation and inflammation on his scrotum. I would pick up a plastic cone from the pet store to put around his head so that he is not able to lick this and then get him in to see your veterinarian for an examination. There are multiple possible causes of this, which include thermal burn, inflammation of structures inside the scrotum causing Choppies to lick due to the discomfort, infection or behavioral. This often happens when dogs excessively lick their testicles, then the skin gets infected and scabs over. I suggest you keep him from licking ( you can put an e-collar on him or a t-shirt or a baby jump suit, if you have one, and then take him to a vet this coming week for an exam. He may need antibiotics for the skin infection.

Poor Timmy! That looks very painful. It's difficult to say for sure from just the picture but it appears that Timmy's scrotum and testicles are infected or even that the scrotum has ruptured. Tummy needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away as he will likely need surgery and prescription antibiotics to treat this issue. He will need to wear an e-collar to prevent him from licking the area. He will also need prescription pain medication as this looks very painful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. An in tact dog may lick his scrotum for many reasons. The most common is actually “contact dermatitis”. That is, a rash from the friction of humping too much. Allergies, pain, and other causes are possible. I’d simply put him in an e-collar (pet store or online) so that he cannot lick them obsessively and cause further irritation. If it’s not better in 48 hours (or worsening at any time), it’s time to see the vet. I absolutely do NOT recommend any over the counter pain medications, though applying some frozen peas (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) might feel great and be very helpful to Fido. I’d do 5 minutes 2-4 times daily. Best wishes to you and Fido!

This looks like an infected wound. It's possible Compton did this himself, meaning no trauma like a bite wound. It is unlikely to be related to his reproductive abnormality, I cannot tell what caused him to start licking this area but allergies would be a concern. Because of how deep and raw it looks I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam and Compton will likely need antibiotics and maybe steroids to help this clear. In the meantime keep his area clean and dry and have Compton wear an ecollar to prevent him from any further licking.

I'm wondering if your dog was neutered recently - it almost looks like there could be a scrotal incision and discharge in the center of the photo. Either way, the raised area looks like it could be a growth, tumor or abscess/infection and if he was not neutered recently the discharge is concerning. I would definitely recommend having your vet take a look.

It's a bit difficult to see what is going on in the picture but if some pink tissue is protruding from the skin, you should have him evaluated immediately. Without adequate care tonight and an Elizabethan collar, he may do a lot more damage to the area by licking it. I would get him seen right away. Your vet can evaluate what is going on and then advise you on how this condition needs to be treated. An open wound can become contaminated and infected rather quickly and if not treated right away may lead to bigger problems soon. Good luck with Kramer. I hope you can seek care right away for him.
