My dog is still scratching from mosquito bites after repellent. Help!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. You could consider using K9 Advantix II for mosquito bite prevention. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Did you ever use for yourself any homemade mosquito repellent that actually worked? if i have to guess the honest answer will be no, because there are non, and this is exactly the same for dogs. one good product that repels mosquitos in dogs is called K9 Advantix II, it is also a preventive for fleas and ticks.

It sounds as if Blitz is becoming re-infested with fleas even after applying appropriate flea preventative measures (i.e. Seresto collar). I would suspect that the environmental control has not yet been adequate to appropriate kill the fleas. I would recommend to my clients to hire a professional parasite control company to perform a treatment for the area (inside and outside). It can take as long as 3 months to adequately control all life stages of the flea life cycle. It is also possible that even though the fleas have been controlled (if you are no longer seeing live adult fleas), that Blitz suffers from a flea allergy. In these cases the itch can last long after the flea is gone. You can continue to bathe Blitz in a soothing shampoo, but if the itch does not resolve it is best to have him seen by his veterinarian to determine what additional anti-pruritic (anti-itch) medication may be needed. It is not uncommon for us to also see secondary bacterial infections (pyoderma) happen due to chronic itching, and a topical medicated shampoo may also be required from his veterinarian.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. Without pictures it is difficult to say what the red bumps are. I would presume a possible allergic reaction / skin infection. My suggestion would be to start the following, all of which can be found online: 1. Malacetic conditioning spray (spray to affected area 2-3 times per day until resolved is the typical recommendation) 2. Duoxo PS Calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved is what most dermatologists would recommend Benadryl has been used on cases like this. The typical recommended safe dose for Benadryl is 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. I hope this helps. If the bumps to not resolve or if they worsen I would seek veterinary care. You are correct Stuart is showing signs of side effects from Advantix, which can last a bit. Once the product has been absorbed by the skin, you have to wait for the active ingredient to be eliminated from the body before the side effects stop. That's not to say that nothing can be done, and I do recommend taking him into the vet as he sounds uncomfortable. There may be medication the vet can prescribe to help with his itchiness. I am so sorry that you are having this problem with Nyla. I certainly understand how frustrating it is to watch your dog be so itchy. If you have seen fleas on Nyla, a flea and tick shampoo will only work for about 2 days, so you will need to find a long term flea preventative option for her. Unfortunately, even when we remove the fleas, if a dog is allergic to flea bites, they will stay itchy.
