My dog has sudden red bumps like mosquito bites. How can I treat them?

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. You could consider using K9 Advantix II for mosquito bite prevention. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

This is likely secondary to an allergic process and the red bumps you are seeing are known as papules. I would recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend using malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the redeemed area or anywhere you see bumps. Benadryl can be given in cases like this and most vets recommend a safe dose of 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours. If there is no improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at this. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. This looks like an allergic reaction to something or general allergies. Make sure he is on a good veterinary prescribed flea control. You can try to shampoo him in a chlorhexidine shampoo to help heal the red bumps. You can also Give him 75 mg (3 adult) Benadryl to help with any itching. If he isn't itching and/or the bumps aren't improving, I would contact your vet for an exam to ensure he doesn't need a stronger allergy medicine or antibiotics. I hope this helps!

Hello. It is difficult to say if these are actually bites, or some other allergic type reaction. Do the bumps show up in different areas each day? How long do they last, a few minutes, hours or days? This might give a better idea of the actual cause of the lesions. I cannot recommend using any medications, but I can recommend trying something over the counter. Petco carries Zymox shampoo & a lotion with hydrocortisone. They also carry a line called Well & Good that also has a hydrocortisone spray. These are very soothing for inflamed & itchy skin. I would also be sure to use a good flea & tick preventative as this will help to discourage all biting insects. This is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment (advocate or advantage), then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). I would recommend bathing with a shampoo such as douxo PS calm shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on. If this does not help, I would have Toby examined by a veterinarian for the most appropriate treatment recommendations.
