My dog gets bitten by mosquitoes. Are homemade repellents effective?

It is possible that the effect is a bit delayed, so if you applied the medication only within the past 24 hours, there is a chance that it has not fully spread through the skin. If it has been longer than that it is possible that it is not working. If you are sure that the cause of the bites is mosquitoes and not mites then you may want to consider getting another repellent medicine. Your vet should be able to provide you with the name of the one that works best in your area. If you are not sure that the bites are caused by mosquitoes and think this may be also caused by mites, you will need to see your vet with your dogs for an exam and mite treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! be sure that Toby is on heart worm prevention which is a parasitic disease from mosquito's. If he hasn't been on prevention he should be tested and started. There are a few products that are license to repel mosquito's: Vectra 3D, K9 Advantix II and Biospot. You can try to rub some Avon Skin So soft on his face (avoid eyes and moth) before letting him out at dusk. I wish you the best!

I would be very hesitant to recommend any product containing essential oils be used on dogs, but if a very light wipe was used, avoiding any areas easily reached by the dog licking, then occasional use should be fine. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. You could consider using K9 Advantix II for mosquito bite prevention. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It does minimize attraction to moskitoes, however I do not think this works for fleas. It will however make your dog smell like Vitamin B which is a very intense aroma which you may not like.
