Why is my dog scooting? Is it worms or anal glands after Drontal?

Hello. You can certainly try to worm her, making sure you use a complete wormer like Safe Guard canine dewormer. Treat for 3 days in a row. If Tootsie continues to scoot, there is a possibility that her anal glands may be developing an infection, or she has allergies. Allergies can affect the mucous membranes, & rectal tissue can definitely be affected. So if she is still having issues several days after you finish the deworming protocol, do let your vet have another look at Tootsie. I think its perfectly feasible to assume that if you are seeing hair in Figlio's poop that this could be causing irritation of his rectum. Often-times the hair gets stuck between sections of the feces, causing them to string together. This causes the poop to kind of hang out a bit, and subsequent scooting. Check his back end to ensure there is no poop there that didn't quite make its way out. I would also recommend keeping hair ties out of his reach here moving forward to prevent this from continuing to be a problem. Another causes of scooting is an anal gland issue. If you are not seeing any hanging poop then its best to get his anal glands checked and squeezed if they are full. Some dogs have a problem expressing these themselves when they go #2, so they need to have them manually expressed once every 4-6 weeks. Worm prevention is the same for him as any other pet, so you can go with anything really such as Pyrantel Palmoate, Fenbendazole, etc. However, if he is on a monthly heartworm prevention, it already has an intestinal dewormer in it. Hi, usually when dogs do that butt dragging behavior which is called scooting, it means they have a problem with their anal glands. Anal glands are glands on either side of the rectum that fill with a substance that is excreted when they defecate. Sometimes they do not empty and can fill up or become infected, both of which are uncomfortable. I would inspect him for swelling or redness next to his rectum and take him to a vet if you see any. It may be they just need to be emptied by a veterinary professional or sometimes groomers can do this. If he is already on nexguard, it is unlikely he has tapeworms, but may have other worms too. Safeguard can be use in dogs at the appropriate dose. If this does not help, take hm to a vet to have his anal glands checked. Good luck I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Bella! Causes for scooting/dragging bottom are: full/impacted or infected anal glands, itchy bottom, stool stuck to the anus and sometimes worms. Causes of bloody and mucousy stool and a decreased appetite are many: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. If she is on monthly heart worm prevention it also is a monthly dewormer making worms less likely. The only way to know for sure is to drop a stool sample off at your vet to have it tested. I can't tell if what is in her stool is worms or strings of mucous. I would start Bella on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. Check er bottom for hanging pieces of feces. if she continues to scoot then she should have her anal glands checked. Below is a link to a good general dewormer. Running her bum across the ground can be a sign of intestinal worms, but it can also be a sign of impacted anal sacs. Dogs whose bum is itchy or painful will scoot, but if Pocket has only done it once, her anus may have simply be itchy at that time. Should she continue to do it, however, I would take her into the vet to see if her anal sacs need to be expressed. I'm not sure what brands of flea and tick repellent you used, so I can't advise if they are considered a good brand or not, but if the tick is dead, then you know the medication is working. Should you see more ticks and/or fleas, you may not have a good brand of repellent, and I would consider using another brand once this current treatment needs to be reapplied.

Hello. The next step here is to rule out allergies, which would definitely explain all of Bella's behaviors. It is not unusual for dogs to experience peri-rectal irritation & inflammation during an allergic flare-up. Talk to your veterinarian about a trial of one of the terrific antiallergy medications ( Apoquel or Cytopoint ). If the dewormer you are using does not indicate that it treats tapeworms then it probably does not. Tapeworms segments look like pieces of rice so if that is what you are seeing then she probably has tapeworms. If you are seeing long worms that look like spaghetti then she probably has roundworms. Dogs get tapeworms from eating fleas so if she has tapeworms that means she has or had a flea problem. Since I don't know the exact medications that you are using, it is difficult to know if they can be given together. You could re-post with both medications and then we may be better able to answer the question. You could also take a stool sample to your vet and have it tested for parasites so you know the exact parasite that she has.
