My dog is scooting, crying, and twitching. Could it be allergies?

Hello. The next step here is to rule out allergies, which would definitely explain all of Bella's behaviors. It is not unusual for dogs to experience peri-rectal irritation & inflammation during an allergic flare-up. Talk to your veterinarian about a trial of one of the terrific antiallergy medications ( Apoquel or Cytopoint ). It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. Vomiting can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, gastrointestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, among other possibilities. Treatment depends on the findings. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

This sounds like her anal sacs are fully and causing the scooting and itching. Even if they look normal on the outside they can be full inside. I recommend your veterinarian express the fluid in the anal sacs and they can see if they are over full or infected. The scooting can cause skin irritation. You can apply a thin coat of Vaseline to soothe the red skin. Yes allergies can cause itching but I would check the anal glands to make sure they are not the problem. Also make sure you are using warm water or something mild to clean the area after pooping. Some chemicals, soaps, and fragrances could cause a skin irritation and itching. However, if this does not improve, have Peanut evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment as anal sac expression may be indicated as this may be due to anal sac impaction or infection. Based on you description of what he has been doing with his hind limbs, I would be more suspicious of something like patellar luxation and possible arthritis as well based on his breed and weight. That is something that can be checked on physical examination. Typically, this is treated medically first to improve comfort though surgery is sometimes needed. Good luck and have a great day!
