My dog is scooting and crying after bladder surgery. Is she in pain?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The best way to determine if crying is wanting out vs. pain is to go get her out and bring her for a very short/controlled walk. If she is happy, exploring, moving well, and doesn't cry when you put gentle pressure on the areas of her surgery, then it is likely that she is just wanting out. Also, if she is eating/pooping/peeing well this is a good sign. Signs of pain including not wanting to move, crying when you touch the surgery site, not eating, shaking/trembling, growling/crying/biting when you go to touch her abdomen, not wanting to walk/explore, not looking happy when you go see her. If you are still unsure you can bring her to a vet to assess if she is painful or not. Best of luck with Gizmo.

His discomfort may not be related to his previous surgery, but occasionally there can be failure of the internal sutures. It's also possible that he has an anal gland issue, or something like intestinal parasites. I would recommend having Scampi examined by your veterinarian if he continues this behavior so they can check the hernia sites internally and also check his anal glands.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zoey! What a rough time she has had! I think it is a good sign that there is no evidence of urine leaking in to her abdomen 4 days after the 2nd surgery! Her bladder went through a lot of trauma because of that there is inflammation. She will take longer than an average cystotomy for that to occur. I would want the straining with small urine production to improve every few days. It may take 7-14 days for the straining ti subside. I would expect similar for the incontinence. As long as she is eating, drinking and happy be patient! Good luck!

Pain after neutering does occur, and your vet can give you pain medication for him if they haven't already. After neutering, some dogs can be tired and want to rest a little more than usual. Keep an eye on the stitches where the surgery was done, and make sure they don't become red and swollen. Do not let your dog lick the stitches. Your dog likely didn't poop until this morning because they weren't allowed any food for 12 hours before the surgery, so they wouldn't have anything to poop out. Butt scooting can also indicate parasites, so if his worming isn't up to date, I would get worming tablets from your vet. If the incision site becomes red, swollen, and warm to the touch, I would contact your vet right away for an appointment. It is also okay to give your vet a call if you are concerned about your dog being in pain, and see what options they can give you for pain relief.

Have him rechecked before giving him up. I wiukd strat with getting him checked for worms or just deworming as this can a song of parasites. They also have 2 small glands just inside their rectum. If the glands get clogged or full, they will do that tobtry to relieve and empty them. This may require a diet change or more fiber to prevent this in the future Lastly check the incisions site. If there is a skin infection or scabs around the area it can itch. If the hair is growing back it may itch some. After this surgery they can be prone to bladder infections since the opening is so much bigger now

Poor Bayley. She just need a bit of time to settle down, follow your vet instruction reading meds and she will be better soon. I would wait till this afternoon and if she continues to be unsettled, not eating and lethargic I would have her re-checked. A stronger, injectable pain killer might be administered by your vet as well, if necessary. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.
