My cat is scooting and marking after surgery. Why and what to do?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

Hello......a friend of ours has a male shorthair cat that just had surgery to remove the penis and created a stoma....half the ureter is gone. The cat seems to have done well but is sliding his rear around after a stool and marking everything up :-(.....he doesn’t know what to do and is afraid he won’t be able to keep him....any suggestions as to why he does this or any solutions? Thanks!!

Have him rechecked before giving him up. I wiukd strat with getting him checked for worms or just deworming as this can a song of parasites. They also have 2 small glands just inside their rectum. If the glands get clogged or full, they will do that tobtry to relieve and empty them. This may require a diet change or more fiber to prevent this in the future
Lastly check the incisions site. If there is a skin infection or scabs around the area it can itch. If the hair is growing back it may itch some. After this surgery they can be prone to bladder infections since the opening is so much bigger now

If you aren’t giving any stool softeners right now, I would contact your vet and ask for some to help with recovery. They may also want to recheck his incision. You can also add some canned pumpkin (~1 teaspoon) to his diet twice a day to help make the stool pass more easily. I hope this helps.

Why is my dog stopping, licking his rear, and crying after surgery?

His discomfort may not be related to his previous surgery, but occasionally there can be failure of the internal sutures. It's also possible that he has an anal gland issue, or something like intestinal parasites. I would recommend having Scampi examined by your veterinarian if he continues this behavior so they can check the hernia sites internally and also check his anal glands.

My cat scoots after litter box. Is it urgent? What should I do?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I do not think you have too much to be concerned about. Sometimes a piece of litter will stick to the hair around the rectum or penis, & rather than groom it off, a cat will scoot. However, with the report that Pumpkin has had a loose stool in the past month, I would not be surprised if he had some intestinal parasites, possibly roundworms, or tapeworms. No emergency to have him seen by your veterinarian, just take him in at your convenience. Take care.

My dog is scooting and crying after bladder surgery. Is she in pain?

She is likely in pain, and that my be one way of her trying to alleviate the pain. If your veterinarian gave you pain medicine for her, please administer as prescribed. This was a big abdominal surgery and therefore it will take a few days for her to settle. You may want to to take her bed to a quiet dark room where she can calm down and sleep, and sort of leave her be. Tomorrow morning she should be less prone to scoot. Should this not stop by tomorrow morning, then take her back to the vet for a recheck. If your vet has not prescribed any pain medication, ring him and ask for them.

Why does my cat drag his bottom and lick his rear excessively?

That's definitely abnormal behavior. I would be worried about his anal glands from that description. It's possible that he had an anal glands problem at one point and developmented a scooting habit that stuck. Another possibility is that he is itchy - this can be caused by food or environmental allergies. I would recommend asking your vet if they thought a hypoallergenic diet (for allergies) or a high fever diet (like royal canin fiber response, for anal glands) would be most appropriate for him and go from there.
