Why is my dog stopping, licking his rear, and crying after surgery?

She is likely in pain, and that my be one way of her trying to alleviate the pain. If your veterinarian gave you pain medicine for her, please administer as prescribed. This was a big abdominal surgery and therefore it will take a few days for her to settle. You may want to to take her bed to a quiet dark room where she can calm down and sleep, and sort of leave her be. Tomorrow morning she should be less prone to scoot. Should this not stop by tomorrow morning, then take her back to the vet for a recheck. If your vet has not prescribed any pain medication, ring him and ask for them.

It can take 3 weeks or longer to completely heal from this surgery. The itching is likely due to the sutures and healing. Keep an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing. Your vet may be able to prescribe a remedy for the itching.

The most common things that could cause this behavior are flea bites around the back or tail, anal sacs that are full and itchy or infected, or a tail injury. You can check for fleas by combing the fur with a fine tooth comb. If you see fleas on the comb then give a bath and apply a flea prevention product. If you see him scooting I recommend your veterinarian express the anal sacs to empty the fluid and see if there is an anal sac infection. You can feel his tail and if there is a tail injury there will be one area that is more sensitive. Usually tail injuries will heal without treatment over a few days. Have him rechecked before giving him up. I wiukd strat with getting him checked for worms or just deworming as this can a song of parasites. They also have 2 small glands just inside their rectum. If the glands get clogged or full, they will do that tobtry to relieve and empty them. This may require a diet change or more fiber to prevent this in the future Lastly check the incisions site. If there is a skin infection or scabs around the area it can itch. If the hair is growing back it may itch some. After this surgery they can be prone to bladder infections since the opening is so much bigger now

This could be a side effect of the anesthesia and/or drugs given to Alfie for the procedure but it could also indicate he is in pain. If you cannot reach the veterinarian that did Alfie's surgery I recommend having him seen by an emergency veterinarian to ensure he is not in pain or is having issues with the drugs leaving his system.

It’s hard to say what’s going on but from the picture, I agree that the anal gland abscess seems to be healing well. As the scab forms, it can produce a mild pulling or pinching sensation which could be uncomfortable. Also make sure there is not hair or feces stuck in the fur around there. If true limping happens or if Ems is biting at the area, you notice discharge, swelling, or have other concerns, definitely see your vet. Hi and thanks for your question. The scabs you mention may be due to chronic licking around his anal area before his anal sacs were expressed. Full anal sacs can cause discomfort and dogs may lick their rear end excessively because of this. You may wipe the area with a mild cleansing cloth a few times a day and see if it improves.
