Why is my dog scooting her butt? Is it hemorrhoids or anal glands?

Hi, sorry to hear that Chimey is in pain. One thing you need to consider is that dogs don’t suffer with haemorrhoids like humans. They can have different conditions affecting the area. They can suffer with impacted anal glands and these can be treated medically up to a certain point. They can also have tumours in the same area, some are benign tumours, other malignant. I would therefore recommend that Chimey is examined by a vet in order to make the correct diagnosis and have the necessary treatment. It is a little difficult to say exactly what is going on with Daisy - she may have a recital prolapse (a condition where some of the tissue in the rectum actually comes out) or chronic irritation if she is scooting on carpeted areas. Scooting may be related to anal gland impactions, infections, or intestinal parasites. I recommend having Daisy seen by a vet as soon as possible because she is likely uncomfortable and the conditions above require treatment. I hope all is well!

Dogs do not get hemorrhoids. This could be a skin infection or an anal gland infection. Unfortunately there is also a possibility that your dog may have a beginning tumor at this site. The earlier such conditions are treated the more likely they can be cured. You will need to schedule an appointment with your vet to have this examined. At best it is just a harmless skin change, but there is no way to determine that from a photograph.

We do not usually see hemorrhoids in dogs. IT is quite possible that his skin is very irritated from being wet and being in contact with the feces, and this could be the cause of the pink color and raised skin. It is possible as well that cutting his fur could have caused a tiny cut in the skin (it can be very tough to cut the fur on a pet in this area without accidentally cutting the skin, we usually use clippers to do this in the vet clinic). I would wash the area well with a mild soap or dog shampoo and monitor it closely. If it becomes more red/swollen or has any discharge, a visit to your vet is needed to be sure there isn't a more significant problem.

Poor Willow! Some dogs can experience pigment changes over time or with chronic inflammation. It's quite possible that the darkening of Willow's anus is a relatively normal change. As you've mentioned, scooting commonly occurs with full anal glands. I'm glad that you have a vet appointment scheduled for her. Your vet will be able to perform a rectal exam to be sure that everything feels normal, as well as empty her anal glands. It should be ok to wait 2 days since that's the next appointment. Full anal glands certainly aren't an emergency, but sometimes the anal glands can become impacted, infected or rupture, which would be a more urgent problem. If you notice any significant swelling or redness on her hind end, I would try to have her checked out sooner. I suppose that it's possible that she could have a perianal fistula, but these occur most commonly in intact male dogs and are often quite red and oozy. Hello. There can be a couple of things that might be bothering Sonny. Impacted, inflamed anal glands are a primary problem. Allergies can affect the delicate mucous membranes of the rectum, & more seriously, cancer. You can try sitting his bottom in a warm bath containing Epsom salts & a good shot of povidone-iodine for 5-10 minutes. Repeat twice daily for a few days. This sounds like her anal sacs are fully and causing the scooting and itching. Even if they look normal on the outside they can be full inside. I recommend your veterinarian express the fluid in the anal sacs and they can see if they are over full or infected. The scooting can cause skin irritation. You can apply a thin coat of Vaseline to soothe the red skin. Yes allergies can cause itching but I would check the anal glands to make sure they are not the problem. Also make sure you are using warm water or something mild to clean the area after pooping. Some chemicals, soaps, and fragrances could cause a skin irritation and itching.
