How can I help my 9-month-old dog scared of outside and other dogs?

Hi, my pet name is Coco she is 9 months old a daniff cross breed between great Dane and bullmastiff. Now that she is 9 months old she is very fearful and scared of outside i think this is because till the age of 6-7 months we didn't take her out for walks she used to pee and do potty in our house. Now we used to take her outside everyday and she's scared of wild dogs and even small pups. Please help me how to make her brave and strong?

I'm sorry to hear that Coco is so frightened of being outside! Unfortunately, what you are describing is very common in dogs that did not receive adequate socialization as young puppies - all pups need to get "out and about" to see the world and have lots of different experiences during their socialization period, which is from 6 to 16 weeks of age. It sounds like Coco didn't get much socialization during this period, which is likely why she is so fearful now.

It will be difficult to get her comfortable with the world at this age, but not impossible. You will need to take things very slowly and make sure that being outside is always a fun and positive experience for her - this may mean simply sitting on the porch with her feeding treats or playing with a toy for a few minutes, then taking her back in. You can work up from there as long as she is comfortable.

Ideally, it would be best to work with a veterinary behaviorist on this - he/she can evaluate Coco in person and help you put together a detailed plan to help work on her anxiety. Prescription medication is also helpful for some dogs with severe anxiety like this, so you could discuss this option with your veterinarian as well.

Unfortunately, it's likely impossible to know why Coco is acing this way. It's possible something has scared her in the back yard and now she has developed a negative association. You may try to counteract this by creating a positive association. Begin by having a high value treat or toy. Start playing/a training session inside the house by the door way. Do this for a few days. Once Coco seems comfortable playing by the door way, toss the toy or treat outside and allow her to retrieve it and come back inside. Do this until Coco is comfortable. Then move outside by the doorway way. Gradually move further and further away from the door way. Then begin gradually decreasing the play time and just hanging outside with her. Try not to leave her outside unattended until she seems comfortable. Try to identify any stressors such as construction noise or any children which may be teasing her. Best of luck.

What a cute puppy! I would recommend asking your vet for recommendations for a good trainer or veterinary behaviorist in your area who can work on helping you to socialize your puppy to make her more comfortable in these situations. It may take some work on your part but the pay off will be worth the effort.

My dog is terrified of loud noises and won't go outside. What to do?

I would continue to take her out on the leash for lots of walks, giving her treats to distract her if there is a noise or something that may scare her. You can also get an anti anxiety supplement at PetCo which may help her to relax. Usually this will improve over several weeks as long as there aren’t more scary episodes. How to help a scared Mastiff puppy with anxiety and house accidents?

Poor Kota! It is possible she wasn't socialized very well as a puppy (mastiffs especially require a lot of socialization with lots of different people, places, and things to help them feel comfortable) and so is still scared from that. It may take a long time with lots of patient practice to help her feel more comfortable. Positive reinforcement with a favorite treat and taking new situations slow (and removing her from the situation if it is too scary and then trying again later) can help. I also highly recommend speaking with a veterinary behaviorist in your area. They are veterinarians trained in both behavior and medicine, and can work with you on a medication and training routine to help reduce Kota's stress and fear and start on positive training to help her relax and adjust. Oh dear, poor Axel! Some dogs have innately anxious and nervous personalities, and German Shepherds (it appears that Axel has a fair amount of Shepherd in him from the pictures!) are known for anxiety issues. Continue gently trying to socialize Axel with new people and surroundings, and offer small treats and gentle encouragement as he is introduced to a new situation. My dog is scared of other dogs. How can I help her socialize safely?

If Chloe isn't comfortable around other dogs, you can help her by starting at a distance where she isn't afraid - this may mean that she needs a lot of distance at first! Praise and reward her with a treat every time she looks at the other dog. When she is able to do this comfortably from far away, you can gradually begin working your way closer as long as she is doing well. Eventually, you can allow her to sniff the other dog and say hello if you wish. It can be difficult to do this correctly on your own in some cases, so I would recommend getting in touch with a reward-based trainer who can help you in person - he/she can help you set up practice sessions with a calm, friendly "helper dog" if needed, and make sure that you are comfortable with how to work on this with strange dogs. How can I get my anxious dog to potty outside when I'm alone with her?

Dogs are situational learners and can sometimes make some very weird connections. I recommend to start clicker training her. You will also need some very high value treats or a high value toy. Whichever she thinks is better. Basically start in the house near the doorway with you and reward her for coming near you. Gradually work your way out the door. What you are trying to do is produce a positive association. It is very important that you remain calm and try not to get frustrated her as she will pick up on negative energy. You can also start feeding her in the back yard or playing out there to continue the positive association. Also give her positive reinforcement for looking at you frequently or when she is afraid. This will teach her to look to you for action. This will be a slow process. Be patient and keep her on the medication for now.
