My dog is terrified of loud noises and won't go outside. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 50 lbs

My female dog, 16 months of age, is acting very scared. 3 days ago, when in the front yard, a kid rode by on a skateboard and as soon as he did a trick on the skateboard she freaked out. I let her in the house and she went straight to the back room. Ever since then she hasn't eaten much, or drank very much water. She also wont go outside in the front or back yard without running to the door, all scared, to be let in the house. She is ok on walks, but scared, ears back, tail between legs shaking.

I would continue to take her out on the leash for lots of walks, giving her treats to distract her if there is a noise or something that may scare her. You can also get an anti anxiety supplement at PetCo which may help her to relax. Usually this will improve over several weeks as long as there aren’t more scary episodes. Please contact a dog trainer if she doesn’t improve in a month or so. They can help you learn how to build her confidence and get her used to various things outside.
