Why is my dog scared, hiding, won't leave room, and won't eat?

HI, I am sorry to hear about Chiquita. If you know that she had some sort of trauma she may in a lot of pain. Pain can cause a dramatic decrease in appetite. She probably isn't moving around much because she is very hurt. Since it has been three days without improvement but actually worsening of signs - now she is not eating - I would highly recommend taking her to either her veterinarian first thing in the morning or an emergency veterinarian this evening. I am sure she needs pain medications and a thorough evaluation to determine why she is getting worse rather then improving. Best of luck to you and your dog.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bonita! She is adorable! There are many reasons for panting, shaking and hiding. She could have been scared by something, have a fever or she could be painful. If she is not eating or drinking and this behavior continues I recommend that you take her to the Vet for an exam. If they find that she is painful they will prescribe appropriate medications for the condition they diagnose her with. I hope this helps and I wish Bonita a speedy recovery!

I am sorry to hear about your chihuahua. Because of her age and her symptoms (lethargy and decreased appetite) I would definitely recommend an examination by a veterinarian. We can certainly see medical problems in older dogs that can cause these symptoms such as kidney disease, infections, liver disease, and more. An exam by your vet and some bloodwork may help to be sure there isn't a treatable medical issue. If there are no abnormalities found, then they may recommend some over the counter products that can help with anxiety such as Adaptil which is a pheremone product available as a plug-in or collar, Zylkene or Composure which are calming supplements, a thundershirt which is a compression vest that calms some dogs. And in some cases prescription strength medication may be necesssary from your veterinarian.

Oh poor girl! She is adorable! Sometimes dogs can get scared of a number of things and act that way. Try to think of anything that could have scared her such as a visitor, neighbors or even loud outside noises. Rarely, dogs try to get away when they do not feel well (more commonly seen with cats). Keep her close, pet her and let her know that everything will be ok with a calm demeanor and gentle voice. If no improvement is observed by tomorrow, have her examined by your veterinarian to ensure that there is no medical reason for her behavior. Good luck!

I'm sorry that Lola is acting this way. Get her in to the vet so that they can do an exam and lab work on her. Its possible that there has been a change in her health that is making her want to hide. Sometimes if dogs are painful or nauseated, they will seek to hide. If she gets a clean bill of health at the vet, contact as your vet to recommend a good trainer. A trainer can probably help you specifically address Lola's behaviors. In the meantime, just be sure that every interaction at home is rewarded; keep treats out and treat her and praise her whenever she is not in the closet. I am so sorry to hear that you and Trixie are going trough this traumatic time. Dogs certainly can have behavior changes related to changes in their environment, especially if she has a close bond with your boyfriend. But, she could also be trying to tell you she does not feel good. It would be a good time to see your family veterinarian for a visit. At the visit you could also discuss the possibility of her going to see your boyfriend. I would then ask his doctors if it is at all possible to arrange her to come for a visit and dependent on this discussion your veterinarian may be able to help make this possible (making sure she is healthy, etc.). It sounds like Hayley is missing your husband. If she is hiding a lot, and also is not eating and drinking much at all, it would be best to have her evaluated by your vet to make sure there's no medical explanation for her change in behavior that needs to be addressed. If her physical exam and any tests (blood tests, etc) that your vet recommends are all normal, then we would say that, yes--this is a behavioral problem. If that is the case, it may help to consult with a behaviorist and trainer; however here's a few things you can try at home. -if she's more bonded to him than you, work on forging that bond with you more. Keep treats that she likes in your pocket. Take her for walks. Give her one on one attention away from the other dogs. This might help. -Do all the dogs get along?
