My dog changed after owner left. Why is she hiding and not eating?

It sounds like Hayley is missing your husband. If she is hiding a lot, and also is not eating and drinking much at all, it would be best to have her evaluated by your vet to make sure there's no medical explanation for her change in behavior that needs to be addressed. If her physical exam and any tests (blood tests, etc) that your vet recommends are all normal, then we would say that, yes--this is a behavioral problem. If that is the case, it may help to consult with a behaviorist and trainer; however here's a few things you can try at home. -if she's more bonded to him than you, work on forging that bond with you more. Keep treats that she likes in your pocket. Take her for walks. Give her one on one attention away from the other dogs. This might help. -Do all the dogs get along? Cats can be very sensitive to changes in their environment and will often display this behavior during times of stress. Considering that Kylie is nine years old and your pit was 14, it would be a major change (assuming they lived together this whole time) for the dog to suddenly be missing from the environment; not to mention how stressful this must have been to you and your family. This could be causing her a fair amount of anxiety/stress. As a vet, I always worry about a medical condition causing this, so the best thing that you can do is take her for a vet exam to ensure there is nothing else wrong with her. If it happens to be stress that's causing her to act like this, then it will take some time before she gets back to normal - sometimes a couple of weeks, sometimes a couple of months. One thing that may help reduce stress is a Feliway pheramone diffuser (can get this at the pet store). These create calming pheramones in the environment, that may help her relax and start acting more normal again. If he's never been away from you, it may be that he is having some anxiety with you being gone that may be contributing. However, it could be something more serious. Since he's acting lethargic and is not eating, talk to your mum ( I assume this is who is caring for him currently?) and see if she can get him in to see a vet in the next few days. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Teddybear could have moderate separation anxiety (that’s the not letting you out of his sight). The appetite changes can also be due to something like chronic pancreatitis or acid reflux/stomach ulcer. I have also seen clingy behavior and changes to appetite with pain (hurt back/neck especially). Long story short, take Teddybear in for a good checkup with your vet. However, it is very likely that she will normalize soon perhaps in a few days. One thing you can do is entice her appetite by adding things like pieces of chicken or beef to her food for a few days just to encourage her to eat. If there is no improvement in the next few days then have her examined by your veterinarian to ensure there is not a medical reason to explain this. Good luck!

Hello. I am so sorry for your worries with Stormi. This may very well still be an adjustment peroid for her. You can try warming her food a bit, & even hand feeding her until she seems more secure in her surroundings. You should also be very careful in the number of treats & amount of human food you are giving her. Dogs very rarely will starve themselves unless there is a medical reason for the loss of appetite, but it is easy to satisfy a small dog with even a few extra treats each day.
