My dog has a runny nose and sore throat. What home remedies work?

Hi. It sounds like Mayor has an upper respiratory infection. These can be caused by viruses, bacterial, or fungal infections. There isn't anything unfortunately from home that would cure it or treat it. That would have to come from your veterinarian. This evening you can close a small bathroom door, turn on shower as hot as possible, get the room very steamy/humid, and place him in that bathroom with the steam for 10 min 2-3 times a day. This isn't treating the infection, but helps break up mucous to make him more comfortable. Good luck.

First, you can try bringing him into the bathroom with you with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and moisture often help to relieve nasal congestion. If he isn't eating and drinking well, you can also offer some low-sodium chicken or beef broth to encourage him to stay hydrated. A mild respiratory infection should resolve on its own within 7-14 days. If the problem goes on longer than this, or if he stops eating completely or becomes very lethargic, then there may not be any option except to take him to the vet since he may need prescription medication and supportive care such as IV fluids to help fight the infection.

It's best to take him to the vet to get examined and medications to treat this. If he does have an upper respiratory infection then he will be prescribed oral antibiotics to take care of it. If the discharge is clear then give it a few days to see if it resolves on its own, because it is possible this is just allergic rhinitis. If the clear draingae is severe, then you can also call your vet to see if they can recommend antihistamines for Panda to try. However if the discharge is any other color, then it's best to take Panda in to your vet for treatment because an infection is likely present, requiring the use of antibiotics to clear things up. This sounds like she has a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. Generally these are viral colds and will run their course over a week or so. Just like with us no antibiotics are needed unless she develops a secondary bacterial infection. If the discharge becomes green and her condition worsens then please bring her right in for treatment.
