Why is my dog rubbing her nose on the carpet until it bleeds?

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be due to a trauma an infection (bacterial or fungal) or mites.

 First of all, you will need to ask the vet to have a look at it (we can do it as well if you ask for a consultation) and perform some skin testing, this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation.

 If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy.

 Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (anti-inflammatories and/or antibiotics).

Your dog may have rubbed it raw, under the couch or through the fence maybe? I suggest washing the area gently with antibacterial soap and water. Apply a warm washcloth 2-3 times a day for five minutes at a time to help keep it clean and draining. After washing and the compress, dry thoroughly and apply a dab of antibiotic ointment that **does NOT** contain hydrocortisone to the wound. Steroids will slow healing. An OTC triple antibiotic ointment will suffice. Rub it in well and don't leave any excess for your pet to lick off. If it does not show signs of healing or if your dog develops a fever, loses his appetite, starts vomiting or has diarrhea have him seen by your veterinarian right away. Potential cause may include allergies, infection, automimmune disease or even cancer. An e-collar (cone) may be used to prevent rubbing or pawing.

Several problems can cause irritated nasal planum. However, especially in herding breeds other immune disorders such as discoid lupus, pemphigus, or zinc deficiency can also cause these signs. I typically treat with oral antibiotics for 3 weeks and if it’s not resolving then I biopsy the nose for a diagnosis. Good luck and I hope it heals soon!

It could be she injured her nose causing the bleeding, has a foreign body in her nasal passage, may have an upper respiratory infection, or could have gotten into something toxic. I would recommend trying to limit Saml ability to dig and root in the blankets while her nose heals. Typically applying any topical medications to a lesion such as this can cause them to try to rub it more, exacerbating the problem. Keep her nose clean and dry, using a warm, damp washcloth if needed to clean it. Maybe for a few days try to limit her access to the blankets or remove any toys or treats she likes to "bury".

Hello. This can be several things. She may have picked up a bacterial infection while rooting around in the soil. This could also be some kind of allergic reaction or possibly even an immune-mediated response. You should have your veterinarian check this out as the right diagnosis will led to the correct treatment ( if anything is necessary ), especially if it is getting worse. Hello, sorry to hear about Cassie. I would recommend having her evaluated by her veterinarian as the bloody discharge is not typical of a common upper respiratory tract infection. Given her age, one potential cause could include something such as a tumor at the back of her nose. Alternatively, this could be something benign such as allergies and inflammation. If so, she may require both allergy medications and antibiotics. In the interim, you can put a cold pack over her nose if she ever does develop another bloody nose. Hope this helps and best of luck.
