I gave my dog too much Rovera for vaccine pain. Is it an overdose?

Leave out the next dose and Jane should be ok as Carprofen (the active ingredient of Rovera) can be given in a double dose once daily or one dose every 12 hours. Watch her poop for the next teo or three days, if it is black, stop the Rovera and consult your veterinarian. Should Jane get lethargic, start to vomit or get diarrhea, you should also take her to your vet for an exam and blood work.

If Clara was 48kg, then this would be the correct dose, but you correct that this would be an overdose for a 48lb dog. I wouldn't worry too much about the dose you gave, but would recommend calling your vet to confirm the correct dosage before giving her any more. I doubt she will have any toxic effects from this dose, but if you happen to notice that she's vomiting profusely, vomiting blood, or has bloody diarrhea, then she will need to go to the vet for treatment. Hi there, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Fortunately, in my experience, it's very uncommon for a single extra dose of carprofen to cause any significant problems. With NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) overdoses in dogs, the two things we're most concerned about are stomach ulcers and possible kidney damage. These usually occur with doses above 20 mg/kg, which for a 25 pound dog would be about 227 mg. Since Tootsie only got 50 mg total this morning (about 4.4 mg/kg), it's unlikely that you will see any serious issues related to this. To be safe, you should monitor her for the next 24 hours for any signs of a problem, such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not eating. If you have any concerns, I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic to be seen.

Normally, a one-time double dose of Rimadyl will not cause any serious problems - but if you're concerned, you can always call the vet who prescribed the medication to ask they want you to bring Rocky in. If Rocky has any vomiting over the next 2-3 days, acts lethargic or doesn't want to eat, then I would recommend having him checked by a vet.

The dose you gave him is exactly what he needs right at the high end of the dose range (if he is 49lbs like it says on your profile). It depends on how much and which type of anti-inflammatory drug administered. For example, if your veterinarian administered the exact same amount you just did of the same medication, that would be a high dose which could lead to side effects such as anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal ulcers. Depending on what your veterinarian administered and the total dosage, they could recommend starting Beau on a medication such as omeprazole to try to prevent a possible gastrointestinal ulcer. If it happened in the last 2 hours they could also consider inducing vomiting. Contacting your veterinarian for those specifics is the best way to go at this time. Good luck!

Hi there. So if I'm understanding correctly, it sounds like she just had one extra dose of Rimadyl at 2:30 am Thursday morning - is that right? While it's true that we always want to stick to the label dosage with this medication, as there is a risk of causing serious side effect issues with higher doses and/or giving it more frequently than prescribed, I would generally not expect to see any major issues with just one accidental "extra" dose. Most of the toxicity issues we see with this medication are related to dogs getting into the bottle and eating a large number of pills at once, or with chronic overdosing over a longer period of time. If your girl is acting normal, eating and drinking fine, and not vomiting, then I don't see any major cause for concern right now. I would definitely recommend calling your regular vet to let them know about the extra dose and make sure they don't recommend doing anything different - but otherwise, I would just monitor her for any problems, and stick to the prescribed dosing schedule from here on out. The main things to watch for would be vomiting, or not eating - if you see either of those symptoms, I would let your vet know right away. If you feel like she's still somewhat painful in between Rimadyl doses, you could also ask your vet about getting her a different pain medication that would be safe to give along with the Rimadyl if she seems painful at night before her next scheduled dose, such as tramadol or gabapentin.

This can affect any size dog. Little very loved dogs tend to show pain more than others. The more one feels sorry for them and tells them "poor baby" the more they yelp. This is because they are very clever and figure out it is a great way to get attention. They are in pain, no doubt, but tend to dramatize it a bit more than the big dogs. Pain in the leg from vaccination can sort of spread to the rest of the body. THere are nerves everywhere and some nerves sympathize with others. This is not unusual. Rimadyl is an antiinflammatory which will alleviate a lot of the pain, if not all. Depending on the weight of your dog you need to give it exactly as prescribed by your vet. The pain should subside fairly quickly and overall you should not need to give it any longer than prescribed. Overall, not a nice side effect, but not unusual, and manageable.
