My dog has roundworms. Can I use liquid piperazine instead of Panacur?

Panacur (fenbendazole) treats infections by hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms in dogs. Although tapeworms are listed, Panacur is ineffective against the tapeworm commonly found in dogs and cats. Legally, we are prohibited from providing dosing information in the absence of a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). This information, however, is easily found online if you don't want to wait for your veterinarian to return to the office.

Duke likely has tapeworms, and that requires praziquantel to treat. Praziquantel is available by prescription only from the vet. Unfortunately, piperazine doesn't kill tapeworms, only roundworms. You are under dosing Pumpkin if you are giving only 0.5 ml (cc) per day. Legally, we cannot provide dosing without a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). Contact your veterinarian for an appropriate dose for a 14lb (6.3kg) dog. Panacur is typically given for 3 days, then repeated in two weeks. You can then consider a monthly preventative, such as HeartGard, Interceptor or Sentinel, that will protect against intestinal parasites and heartworm.

It's fine to administer Atlas a different brand of deworming treatment, and I recommend giving him Panacur. It's an excellent deworming that you can get OTC, and it kills roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms :-)

If you are seeing worms that look like rice, those are tapeworm segments. Panacur can kill some types of tapeworm, but the best drug for it is praziquantel. That is a prescription only drug, and a great brand that contains praziquantel is Drontal. You can try the Panacur, but you may have to go back to your vet to get Drontal. As long as you practice good hygiene (wash your hands after petting him, wash your hands after cleaning his litter box), you should be fine. I hope this helps!

Panacur C and Drontal. Plus have the same spectrum of activity. Both control Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, and Tapeworms. So, one is not better than the other in that respect. Drontal is easier to administer since you only need to give one dose; with Panacur you give one dose a day for 3 days in a row.
