My dog has an irritated sore on his leg. What is it and how to help?

You can try to shave around it and clean it. If it continues to look superficial (as it looks on the picture), you can consider applying a thin film of triple antibiotic on it in case it is just a mild infection. If it does not resolve within 1 week of starting such treatment, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello. It is very difficult to determine what is going on with the leg, but the area looks like some kind of raised lesion. I think this is a good one to have your veterinarian take a hands-on look to make sure everything is OK. I hesitate to tell you to take a watch & wait approach with this. I agree with you that the area looks very irritated. It's a little difficult to tell from the pictures, but the area actually looks a little thickened or swollen, so I think it is worth having your veterinarian examine it and do some testing to see what might be going on in order to determine the best treatment for Atlas. Hello. All I can see is a small area of dermatitis on the leg. It can have many causes, but you can treat this with an over the counter skin antiseptic called Hibiclens. Gently scrub the skin twice a day & dab dry ( do not rinse ). Do this for about 2-3 weeks & the lesion should clear up. But since I cannot make any kind of actual diagnosis, if the skin becomes more irritated or the area does not seem to be healing, please consider seeing your veterinarian. This looks like a localized allergic reaction. I suggest you apply some topical hydrocortisone cream to the area 2-3 times per day. If after 5 days it does not look better then I suggest you get Luna to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

This area resembles a localized skin infection most likely caused by a bacteria that normally lives on his skin. It is quite red around the area so if you notice that these areas are spreading, getting worse and not improving, you should have your veterinarian evaluate Yeti. They can get a thorough history and then examine Yeti and the affected areas. Skin problems have many causes including bacterial infections, allergies, flea/tick/insect bites/stings, trauma, fungal infections, problems with mites, or even internal problems that present with skin involvement. Your vet can advise whether diagnostics are needed (skin tests, blood tests, etc) or if a treatment plan is indicated based on what they observe. Good luck with Yeti.
