Is my dog at risk after exposure to a sick puppy that passed away?

Vaccines in puppies should be given every 3-4 weeks starting at 8 weeks of age. So he can be boostered at 11-12 weeks (looks like he has about a week to go). The chances of him getting something from the unvaccinated dog's owner is pretty minimal but there is always a slight chance. I personally would not be too worried about it but there are a couple things you could do to minimize risk. You could just kindly ask her to wash her hands before petting. The other option is that you don't have to let her pet him at all. You can always say you are busy training him and you would prefer that no one pets him for now if you want to avoid a conflict..... Hi there. Assuming Sophie has had her full vaccination schedule and appropriate boosters then the likelihood of her becoming ill with parvovirus is very rare. Of course, some animals don’t respond as well to vaccines as others, but that is a rare occurrence. If for some reason she does get sick and you have proof of vaccination given by a veterinarian then most vaccine companies will pay for treatment. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

Hello. I think that Stewie has little risk of becoming ill from contact with this puppy. Adult dogs, especially those that have been vaccinated, usually have good immunity against Parvovirus. The fact that his vaccine “expired” 6 weeks ago is not as critical as you may think. It is likely that he still has adequate protection against the virus. Hi there. Vaccinations are based on the puppy's age, not how many vaccines they've had previously - so it doesn't really matter whether your vet is "counting" the first ones or not. If it's been more than three weeks since her most recent vaccination, she would be due for a booster now. If she's about three months old, she will need a total of 1-2 additional boosters to finish out her series, since we want the last vaccine to be given at 16 weeks or older.

The vaccinations you would give a puppy does not protect against any human diseases he may catch (like a flu virus). The vaccinations are for dog diseases. I strongly recommend you start the vaccinations for Coco. They should have been started at 8 weeks of age. The risk is probably pretty low, but Lucy may not have full immunity for a couple of weeks after this last vaccine was administered. We booster this vaccine frequently to hopefully catch a dog during the window where antibody leftover from mom is declining and the puppy can make it's own immune response - this may have already happened, or she may be in the process of mounting this immune response now. If Lucy seems nauseous, if she is vomiting, or if her appetite is decreased I'd recommend seeing your vet right away.
