My dog might have ringworm. When to see vet? How to prevent spread?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I think my dog may have contracted ringworm. Does he need to go to the vet right away or can it wait until tomorrow? Is there anything I can do in the meantime to keep him comfortable and keep it from spreading more on him as well as to our cat and family members?

It’s probably okay to wait until tomorrow as long as he doesn’t seem too uncomfortable. Environmental contamination is a concern so it would be best to keep him confined to one room in the house (the easier to clean the better) and minimize contact with people and pets. Wash hands after petting him. I wouldn’t recommend staring any topical medications until you see your vet - there are some other skin conditions that can look like ringworm and that may not be the diagnosis.
