My dog has ringworm symptoms. Should I bathe him before the vet?

It’s probably okay to wait until tomorrow as long as he doesn’t seem too uncomfortable. Environmental contamination is a concern so it would be best to keep him confined to one room in the house (the easier to clean the better) and minimize contact with people and pets. Wash hands after petting him. I wouldn’t recommend staring any topical medications until you see your vet - there are some other skin conditions that can look like ringworm and that may not be the diagnosis.

If you wash the skin today, it may be hard for the vet to get enough bacteria or fungi off the skin to culture, and it may change the appearance enough to make it hard to diagnose. Better leave it be until tomorrow and then attack it with a vengeance according to your vet's recommendation.

If it looks like ringworm, it is quite possible that Buzz does have ringworm. I would isolate him from any other animals in the home right away, as it is contagious to both other animals and humans. Have him seen by a vet in the morning, who can use a fungal culture and Wood's lamp to confirm he does have ringworm, and can prescribe antifungal treatments for it. Do not use any OTC antifungal treatments on it, such as ointment for athlete's foot because athlete's foot is caused by a different fungus than ringworm and it will not treat it. If Buzz does have ringworm, you will have to check yourself to make sure you don't have any lesions from it, and see if your doctor if you find suspicious spots. The can gently clean the wound with warm water and just let it air dry. He will need to see his veterinarian tomorrow as he may require an antibiotic depending on how deep the wound is. I would strongly recommend to take them straight to the vet before using any antiseptic solution, which may not be effective at all. Any previous treatment may influence and delay diagnosis and be contraindicated given the young age.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Poor Maggie! I think the 2 most possible causes are ring worm (though I agree not classic in appearance) or a skin infection. You can start bathing Maggie in a medicated shampoo. Bathe 2-3 times per week and leave the later on for 10 mins before rinsing. You can do that until your appointment next week. IF you think shadow has ringworm on his head I would recommend anti fungal baths and possibly an oral anti fungal depending on how severe the infection is. The best idea would be to take Shadow to a vet for confirmation and treatment. Ringworm is contagious to people so make sure you are washing your hands and if you detect an abnormal rash go directly to your doctor.
