My dog has a sore on her leg. Could it be ringworm? When to see a vet?

From the picture, I'm concerned that doesn't look like ringworm to me. It looks like it could be a growth or an ulcerated area. It looks pretty red and sore in the picture, and unfortunately without seeing Chloe in person, I can't say for certain what it is. I would take her into a vet to get this diagnosed and treated, try to have her seen by her vet in the next few days. I hope this helps!

Ring worm is a possibility and is contagious to both people and other animals. There is no way to be certain from the photos. Your vet can check it with a woods lamp to see if it reacts or do a culture to confirm it. It may be a reaction from a tick or allergy that is also causing those spots You can try to keep the spot clean and apply a topical antifubgal until you get the seen to be safe

This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection or secondary to an injury that has not healed, among other possibilities. You can use an e-collar to try to prevent further self trauma. I recommend that you have Tink evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Tink, wear gloves when handling this lesion. Good luck and best wishes!

If it looks like ringworm, it is quite possible that Buzz does have ringworm. I would isolate him from any other animals in the home right away, as it is contagious to both other animals and humans. Have him seen by a vet in the morning, who can use a fungal culture and Wood's lamp to confirm he does have ringworm, and can prescribe antifungal treatments for it. Do not use any OTC antifungal treatments on it, such as ointment for athlete's foot because athlete's foot is caused by a different fungus than ringworm and it will not treat it. If Buzz does have ringworm, you will have to check yourself to make sure you don't have any lesions from it, and see if your doctor if you find suspicious spots. Hello there. Thank you for using PetCoach and thank you for including photos. My best guess is that this is ringworm. It does not look like a bite. I suggest you get Molekin' to your vet for an exam and to get a proper diagnosis for two reasons. Number one, ringworm is contagious to people and number two, an adult dog that gets ringworm usually has an underlying problem with their immune system. An adult dog should not get it. This is much more common in puppies. Remember, it is impossible for me to diagnose over the internet with just a photo. I am just giving my best guess. Many skin diseases look similar to the naked eye so that is why testing is important. It may take 2+ months for it to clear completely up but you should start noticing a difference in a .couple weeks. If you don't have any improvement in 2 weeks or it worsens then you definitely need to get him to the vet. This could be due to a bacterial or fungal infection. They can both look like this. It could also be due to something that is irritating the skin like mites, fleas, or allergies. It does not appear like ringworm, but it's impossible to know for sure without testing it. The species of fungus involved in toenail infections is different than ringworm and toenail fungus is not very contagious to dogs. This looks rather mild right now. The best thing to do is have the lesion evaluated by a veterinarian to help identify the cause. However, it would be fine to give a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (can find this at the pet store) in the meantime. If that's helpful, this can be repeated weekly until the problem resolves.
