My dog has broken skin rings on her belly and legs. Is it ringworm?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Phene appears to have either ringworm or bacterial folliculitis. To determine for sure, she will need to be examined by your veterinarian and have the appropriate therapy prescribed. This could be other things, but given what you are describing and the appearance from the picture, these two are most likely. As ringworm is a possibility, you should take caution as it is a zoonotic (transmissible to humans) disease, so wash after handling Phene, and please see your physician if you notice any skin lesions on yourself. Often, if it is one of these diseases, frequent bathing with medicated shampoo will be prescribed along with topical creams or ointments, and in some cases, oral medications are needed to clear the disease. These will be at the discretion of the veterinarian following assessment. Hope this helps!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed.  There are medications such as Apoquel or prednisone which may help with the itch. 

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. 

Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). 

If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. 

Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Without a fungal culture, it is very difficult to definitively diagnose ringworm. There are a lot of skin issues that can look red, crusty or flaky & not all of them will be ringworm. Using a combination of antifungal & antibacterial products is a great idea. For any shampoo, make sure the lather stays on the skin for at least 10 minutes before rinsing. If there is no improvement after about 3 weeks, or the skin lesions get worse, please have your veterinarian examine them

Hello there. Thank you for using PetCoach and thank you for including photos. My best guess is that this is ringworm. It does not look like a bite. I suggest you get Molekin' to your vet for an exam and to get a proper diagnosis for two reasons. Number one, ringworm is contagious to people and number two, an adult dog that gets ringworm usually has an underlying problem with their immune system. An adult dog should not get it. This is much more common in puppies. Remember, it is impossible for me to diagnose over the internet with just a photo. I am just giving my best guess. Many skin diseases look similar to the naked eye so that is why testing is important. It may take 2+ months for it to clear completely up but you should start noticing a difference in a .couple weeks. If you don't have any improvement in 2 weeks or it worsens then you definitely need to get him to the vet. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to ringworm. This could also be just a focal skin bacterial infection, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Katana evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Ringworm can be transmitted to humans so just in case this is what is going with Katana, wear gloves when handling this lesion. Good luck and best wishes!
