My dog has ringworm. What are affordable treatment options for him?

Ringworm is typically treated with antifungal medication and medicated shampoos prescribed by your veterinarian. it would be best to speak with the vet that diagnosed the ringworm so that they can get you started on the correct shampoo and medication to help Chulo feel better. As ringworm is extremely contagious to other pets and people, it is best to make sure to keep him separated from other pets until the ringworm is treated, and to thoroughly wash hands, clothing, bedding, etc to avoid the spread to yourself or other members of the family.

It’s difficult to say what it is from just the picture. Since you aren’t able to take him to the vet, you could try to rotate lamisil cream and neosporin. Put each on twice a day but separate by at least an hour. Also, don’t let him lick that area. You can put a cone collar collar on him to help prevent this. You can also start him on some Benadryl. See link below for dosing. If it still isn’t improving then you will want to try to find a way to see the vet since he may need oral antibiotics or an oral anti-fungal to help him heal. Circular peeling areas might be an indication of ring worm, a fungal infection that can be spread to other animals as well as people. The most common treatment is an antifungal drug called clotrimazole that is used topically. It is available in sprays and creams. Treat the area carefully and use gloves as not to risk spreading the infection elsewhere. Formulations are also available through your veterinarian. The vet would be able to obtain samples from the affected region to determine if ring worm is in fact the cause of what you are seeing.

Those look like pyoderma/bacterial skin infection erythematous (red) collarettes. The treatment is typically a 10 day course of prescription Simplicef (cefpodoxime) oral antibiotic, a medicated antibacterial/antifungal shampoo such as Malaseb (available on chewy.com or petco.com) every 2-3 days for 2 weeks and a topical prescription antibiotic/steroid ointment such as Dermavet. Your vet will likely be able to dispense all 3 after an exam if it is confirmed to a bacterial skin infection. Fungal infections are zoonotic/transmissible to humans and typically present as circular areas of complete hair loss that are often scaly. Good luck!

You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. First of all it is necessary that you have a definitive diagnosis that your dog is indeed suffering from ringworm, so you do not give her medications on suspicion of ringworm. There are quite a few diseases that can look like ringworm, especially bacterial infections. So if your dog is indeed suffering from ringworm your vet will prescribe either a topical treatment (depends on the extent of the ringworm infection) such as an antifungal ointment, or a antifungal bath, and/or also oral medications. Both Itraconazole and Ketoconazole tablets have pregnancy risks, so possibly would not be a good choice to treat ringworm during pregnancy whereas a topical shampoo containing a fungicide may be a suitable choice. I suggest you see your veterinarian with your dog for a proper diagnosis and his recommendation for treatment as he will know best after examining your dog.

Hello. With lesions on or near the mouth, the easiest way to treat ringworm is with one of several antifungal medications that Maho will take by mouth.
