My dog has peeling skin circles. Could it be ringworm? What to do?

It’s uncommon for older dogs to get ringworm, and when they do it’s generally on the face. This area may have started to itch and she got it red and irritated from licking. I would clean the area with a medicated shampoo that kills both bacteria and yeast. Then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it. In addition use a cone if she’s licking the area. If you wash your hands well after touching her you shouldn’t get anything. If it’s not healing or there are other areas then please take her in for an exam and skin tests to determine if it’s ringworm or infection. Those look like pyoderma/bacterial skin infection erythematous (red) collarettes. The treatment is typically a 10 day course of prescription Simplicef (cefpodoxime) oral antibiotic, a medicated antibacterial/antifungal shampoo such as Malaseb (available on chewy.com or petco.com) every 2-3 days for 2 weeks and a topical prescription antibiotic/steroid ointment such as Dermavet. Your vet will likely be able to dispense all 3 after an exam if it is confirmed to a bacterial skin infection. Fungal infections are zoonotic/transmissible to humans and typically present as circular areas of complete hair loss that are often scaly. Good luck!

When I hear that a dog like Boo has small, circular sores, the first thing that comes to my mind is ringworm. Ringworm is a fungal infection that is characterized by red circles. I would take Boo into the vet tomorrow. The vet can do a physical exam, use a Wood's lamp, and may do a fungal culture to confirm that he does have ringworm. If he does, every animal in your house will need to be treated for it, as it's highly contagious to both animals and humans. You will also have to disinfect the home. Unfortunately there are several skin diseases in dogs that can look just like ringworm - bacterial skin infections causing epidermal collarettes would be most common. Your best course of action would be to have your vet examine Kapano since oral medication is often required for ringworm - even though there is a single lesion it may be elsewhere in his fur and contamination of the environment can cause reinfection. I know some people and veterinarians will use over the counter creams containing miconazole, but they often are not very effective. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Poor Maggie! I think the 2 most possible causes are ring worm (though I agree not classic in appearance) or a skin infection. You can start bathing Maggie in a medicated shampoo. Bathe 2-3 times per week and leave the later on for 10 mins before rinsing. You can do that until your appointment next week. It could be ringworm but it could also be some other fungal or bacterial infection, you need to take him to the vet in order to have it checked and diagnose, if it is ringworm he will need an anti fungal treatment for 3 weeks.
