My chihuahua reverse sneezes, wheezes, and cries. What can I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 lbs

Hi, my male chihuahua who is about 5 is having an extreme reverse sneezing problem. But I feel like it's more than that. He's been doing it more often and this morning it happened and he sounded like he was wheezing. I could see tears in his eyes and I wanted to help him. I don't know how to though.

Hello, poor Diego- reverse sneezing can be quite distressing for your dog. If its happening frequently its possible that he may have something irritating in his nose - something he inhaled?
There is an over the counter nasal spray called neo synephrine which may help him. If he has blood or mucus discharge - take him to your vet.

Hi. Poor Diego! Reverse sneezing is very common and can come and go. If he isn't in respirator distress, you can try a half of a children's benadryl 12.5mg tablet. Reverse sneezing is usually secondary to allergies. Good luck with her!

Thanks for using PetCoach. In some cases reverse sneeze may be due to allergies. You could give Willard a dose of Benedryl to see if it helps. I recommend consulting with his vet for the appropriate dose. https://www.petcoach.co/pet-medication/benadryl/
If it does not help or he has any other signs of illness I recommend a vet visit for Willard.

I'm wondering if Daisy might be reverse sneezing when she's making this new noise. A reverse sneeze and a sneeze can have similar causes - anything that irritates the nose and throat including allergens, upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign material like pieces of grass or even parasites can all cause sneezing and reverse sneezing. I usually don't get too concerned about either one unless there is also nasal discharge or the sneezing/reverse sneezing is occuring frequently enough that it seems to be affecting the pet's ability to rest. If so I think that your best bet is to see a vet unfortunately.

My dog makes a strange noise through his nose. Is it a reverse sneeze?

Poor Charlie! Look up a YouTube video of a “reverse sneeze” to see if this is what he is doing. If so, this is nothing to worry about and you can Help him stop by rubbing him from head to tail. Sometimes Benadryl on a regular basis will help decrease the frequency. See link below. If this isn’t what he is doing then I would have your vet look at him. With him being so young, he could have a viral infection or an upper respiratory infection which needs to be treated. If left untreated he could get worse. My flat-nosed dog has frequent reverse sneezes. What can I do?

Reverse sneezing is commonly caused by irritation to the back of the throat. In breeds like pugs with short noses there also tends to be excessive tissue in the back of the throats that causes irritation. You could talk to your vet and see if something like an antihistamine might be safe to try, although it may not help much. Some dogs that have major breathing issues related to brachycephalic airway disease, the syndrome seen in pugs and bulldogs that is related to malformation of the nose and airway, can benefit from surgery to trim some of the tissue of the soft palate.
