My flat-nosed dog has frequent reverse sneezes. What can I do?

Bruce's reverse sneezing may be in response to many things including poor air quality (which is common in houses during the winter time), a mild infection, a tumor/polyp (less common) and yes, some times as pets age, these things can become more prevalent. If it continues or worsens, have him seen by his veterinarian who may prescribe an anti-inflammatory or even an antibiotic. At home you can continue your current care. Adding in an Omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs (you can find these online, at pet stores or at your vet's office) can also help the condition. Using an HEPA air filter may also be beneficial. I'm wondering if Daisy might be reverse sneezing when she's making this new noise. A reverse sneeze and a sneeze can have similar causes - anything that irritates the nose and throat including allergens, upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign material like pieces of grass or even parasites can all cause sneezing and reverse sneezing. I usually don't get too concerned about either one unless there is also nasal discharge or the sneezing/reverse sneezing is occuring frequently enough that it seems to be affecting the pet's ability to rest. If so I think that your best bet is to see a vet unfortunately.

Hi there! Usually reverse sneezing is caused by nasal mites which are microscopic bugs that invade the nasal cavity. It could also be allergies. I’d have your vet check Molly lungs just to be safe and get her started on nasal mite medicine. Some prefer ivermectin which is oral for 3 weeks, others use different medication. Sometimes, opening your dog's mouth to let them take in air can help reduce the episode. Usually you can just leave Rosko be until it stops. You can also try lightly blowing in his face. When you do this, it causes him to swallow a few times which should stop the reverse sneezing. If this is a consistent problem, then I would have him seen by a vet to have it treated. I hope this helps!
