My dog is reverse sneezing, shaking, and vomiting. What's wrong?

It sounds as Sapphire is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

[Allergies](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/canine-allergies/) can stimulate the release of histamines which can increase gastric acid production the stomach which may explain the vomiting. If she is lethargic, anorexic, or shaking, I would bring her in for a physical exam. You can discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets and antihistamine use with your veterinarian during the exam.

Reverse sneezing can be caused by allergies, upper respiratory infection, or something caught in the back of the nose or throat causing irritation. Sometimes the reverse sneeze can cause vomiting, or it is possible that some vomit got into the nasal passages and is causing irritation and thus reverse sneezing. However, I am more concerned that Benny is having vomiting and diarrhea at the same time. Small dogs can become dehydrated very quickly. Possible causes for vomiting and diarrhea include intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral infections, intestinal blockages, or other internal issues. If Benny has been having both vomiting and diarrhea for more than 24 hours, he should be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Reverse sneezing is caused by irritation of the nasal cavity and/or larynx which an be allergy related or even caused by a nasal mite in rare cases. Yes pets can seem to be trying to vomit, but this is really them trying to scratch the irritated area. If she is doing this more frequently than comfortable with and does not respond well to offering her water during the event, then a vet visit is recommended to perhaps start her on allergy medicine and to check her for possible nasal mites. However, in most cases pets don't require any treatment for reverse sneezing episodes b/c they are infrequent and don't impede on the quality of life of the pet. Laryngeal paralysis is more common in larger breed dogs. It is not impossible for Little Puppy to have that but it is not likely. It is more likely that he has a collapsing trachea. Based on your description, I’m suspicious that your dog may simply be experiencing a reverse sneeze. This is completely normal and benign. Sneezing usually occurs with irritation to the front of the nasal passages, but reverse sneezing occurs with irritation to the back of the nasal passages. Consider looking up a video of reverse sneezing to compare with your dog’s actions. If your dog is retching to vomit unproductively, isn’t eating or experiencing other problems, I recommend a trip to the vet. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues.
