My dog has reverse sneezing, vomiting, and diarrhea. What's wrong?

I'm glad to hear that Sassy seems to be doing better; do I understand that correctly? It is possible that she may have been having some gastritis or an upset stomach that caused the vomiting; and perhaps some gastric reflux. If they regurgitate and the stomach contents come up to the back of the throat from reflux, that could potentially lead to some reverse sneezing and irritation in the throat. In a more serious scenario, aspiration can occur (the stomach contents from vomit or regurgitation go down into the airways) which could lead to pneumonia. You can ask your vet if an acid reducer for her stomach may be warranted, but other than that, as long as she's doing well I don't think you need to worry.

Based on your description, I’m suspicious that your dog may simply be experiencing a reverse sneeze. This is completely normal and benign. Sneezing usually occurs with irritation to the front of the nasal passages, but reverse sneezing occurs with irritation to the back of the nasal passages. Consider looking up a video of reverse sneezing to compare with your dog’s actions. If your dog is retching to vomit unproductively, isn’t eating or experiencing other problems, I recommend a trip to the vet. Reverse sneezing refers to the reflex of bringing air into the body to remove irritants in the upper area that lies behind the nostrils. The most common causes for younger dogs include infections, the existence of a cleft palate, or bronchial infections. Another primary cause is the involuntary movement of the hairlike cilia that line the respiratory tract and act to remove foreign matter from the air before it reaches the lungs. This involuntary movement of the hair is medically termed ciliary dyskinesis. The most common causes for older dogs include nasal tumors and dental diseases. Other causes can be mucus irritation, nasal passage obstruction, inflammation, excess nasal discharge or secretion, pneumonia, chronic vomiting, and gastrointestinal disease. Under vaccinated or unvaccinated dogs are at a higher risk of developing infections, which may lead to consistent sneezing. Chronic dental disease can lead to both chronic sneezing and reverse sneezing. I recommend taking Tucker into your vet to see what is causing the reverse sneezing, and how best to treat it.

I'm wondering if Daisy might be reverse sneezing when she's making this new noise. A reverse sneeze and a sneeze can have similar causes - anything that irritates the nose and throat including allergens, upper respiratory infections, nasal foreign material like pieces of grass or even parasites can all cause sneezing and reverse sneezing. I usually don't get too concerned about either one unless there is also nasal discharge or the sneezing/reverse sneezing is occuring frequently enough that it seems to be affecting the pet's ability to rest. If so I think that your best bet is to see a vet unfortunately.

A reverse sneeze can be caused by irritants in the upper airway region so if there has been an increased amount of dust in the air this could potentially be causing the symptoms you are seeing. An environmental allergy or an upper respiratory infection could also lead to these symptoms. A reverse sneeze should resolve within a short amount of time. It sounds as Sapphire is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

If she is lethargic, anorexic, or shaking, I would bring her in for a physical exam. You can discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets and antihistamine use with your veterinarian during the exam.
