My dog wheezes, coughs, has throat bulge. Is it reverse sneezing?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 24 days old | 35 lbs

My dog, Nutella, seems to be having breathing problems. Sometimes, she'll be getting a belly rub, or she'll get too excited, or she'll just be standing there and start making a sound that's a cross between a wheeze and a cough and she can't breathe. My mom thinks Nutella may be having an anxiety attack but I don't think that's the case. When it happens, there's a bulge in her throat and if I place my hand on it and apply gentle pressure and smooth it down, she stops. Any idea what it could be?

It sounds to me like Nutella could be reverse sneezing, which is not dangerous and very common, especially in short faced dogs. This is caused by tracheal irritation of any kind or just excitement in general, and there is no cure. The bulge in the throat is likely her larynx which is a normal part of her anatomy, but can feel kind of strange if you don't have experience palpating dog tracheas. If in doubt, you should have her examined by your vet for more information.
