My dog keeps reverse sneezing and has lumps on her jaw. Is it serious?

If there are lumps on his throat and he is having upper respiratory symptoms, I would recommend having x-rays of his upper airway done to see if there is any compression or deviation of the airway due to one of the lumps. He may also be dealing with allergies, in which case you can try an antihistamine. Most people use 1mg per 1lb of body weight every 12 hours for Benadryl. The vet can also insert a small needle into the masses and examine them under a microscope for a better understanding of what the lumps might be. I hope this helps! It sounds to me like Nutella could be reverse sneezing, which is not dangerous and very common, especially in short faced dogs. This is caused by tracheal irritation of any kind or just excitement in general, and there is no cure. The bulge in the throat is likely her larynx which is a normal part of her anatomy, but can feel kind of strange if you don't have experience palpating dog tracheas. If in doubt, you should have her examined by your vet for more information.

Hello, and thank you for your question! Lulu is such a cutie! Reverse sneezing is quite common in small breed dogs and for the most part is quite harmless. You can try to prevent the episodes by minimizing her level of excitement (e.g. Not getting overly excited yourself when she greets you at the door), and using a harness instead of a collar when out for walks. One thing that I did with my dog to stop the reverse sneezing episodes was to gently put my finger across his nostrils, to block the airflow through the nose and force him to breathe through his mouth. This worked so well that he eventually learned to do it himself! If the reverse sneezing and coughing episodes seem to be truly bothersome to Lulu, I would recommend taking her to the vet. In rare cases, reverse sneezing may be associated with allergies or nasal foreign bodies. I hope this helps, and that Lulu is otherwise doing well!

Poor Charlie! Look up a YouTube video of a “reverse sneeze” to see if this is what he is doing. If so, this is nothing to worry about and you can Help him stop by rubbing him from head to tail. Sometimes Benadryl on a regular basis will help decrease the frequency. See link below. If this isn’t what he is doing then I would have your vet look at him. With him being so young, he could have a viral infection or an upper respiratory infection which needs to be treated. If left untreated he could get worse. I am not sure that the sneezing and the lump are related. I recommend to have her checked out by her veterinarian to examine that lump. Lumps can appear for variety of reasons and it could be unrelated to her stay. You may ask the sitter if there was any hard play or trauma or anything else that might cause a lump to form due to injury. If the doctor is more suspicious of a tumor, you will need to have the mass aspirated in order to know if it is something benign or malignant. The sneezing could be many things including mild infection or allergies. Have the vet take a good listen to her lungs as well as palpate her trachea. However, thankfully this usually is benign and rarely becomes anything concerning. Most dogs just have reverse sneezing episodes every once in a while without causing any issues.
