My dog is restless, lying down, then getting up. Is she in pain?

This sounds like abdominal pain, or back pain. Since she’s not spayed you need to be concerned about a uterine infection which could cause lethargy and abdominal discomfort. If she has a bulging disk in her back that can cause pain also. I would take her temperature to check for a fever, and if she has a fever or these symptoms continue then please bring her in for an exam and treatment. They will feel to find where she’s painful and may do an X-ray or blood tests to diagnose the problem. She’s a very small dog so please don’t wait too long since she doesn’t have the body reserves of a bigger dog. It definitely sounds like Luna is very painful!! Different dogs can have varying types of pain tolerance and it may be that Luna does not tolerate pain as well. However I would hate to miss something more serious on a presumption that she is just not as tolerant of pain. Cost is definitely something to consider as ER visits can rack up a higher cost than your veterinarian may. Unfortunately, that may be the best for Luna if she just isn't feeling and acting quite right. I would add that if she is otherwise eating and drinking normally, and not having any vomiting or diarrhea or any of the other signs mentioned on the previous thread then I would be less worried about rushing her to the ER and may give her a little more time. If her bloodwork was fine a couple of days ago then perhaps the metacam could help control her pain a little better and reduce the inflammation a UTI can cause. However, know that kidney values can change in short periods of time, thus I would still recommend having a veterinarian that has looked at Luna make the recommendation for or against metacam or NSAIDs. Also consider, that there are other causes for pain in a Beagle that may not be associated with her UTI. In a Beagle I would want to check for back pain, neck pain, or abdominal pain (pancreatitis, kidney disease, foreign bodies, or even liver disease). All of these may benefit from pain medication and even NSAIDs, but some of these could require more aggressive medical or surgical management.

It sounds like something is causing her discomfort. She should really be examined by a vet, if it continues. She could have a problem with her back, neck, or abdomen causing her some pain. Your vet can do a thorough physical examination to localize the problem and then treat. She may need an anti-inflammatory or pain medications. Hope she feels better soon.

First of all, Luna is adorable! I'm sorry to hear that she seems a bit uncomfortable today. Since the focus of her crying and whining seems to center around jumping on or off of the bed, my main concern would be that she developed a back or neck injury. In some cases, dogs can be quite stoic with these injuries until they move or are handled in certain manners. Back injuries can also cause referred pain in the abdomen, which could explain why she pants (this can be a sign of pain) when you pick her up. It can be difficult to precisely determine if back or neck pain are present without a lot of training, and it is often overlooked at home. Since she is intermittently crying and panting, it sounds as though Luna may be relatively painful. I recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to try to determine the source of this pain so that treatment can be started. Until you can get to the vet, keep her restricted to a crate or small room and avoid allowing her to jump on or off of furniture or use the stairs, as this could exacerbate any underlying injury. Those are often symptoms of pain...if Ollie has recently had table food, it is possible she has pancreatitis which can cause abdominal pain. A visit to your veterinarian for a full physical exam to help localize the pain (I.e. to the abdomen or limbs). Screening bloodwork may help provide additional information/allow your vet to prescribe appropriate pain meds if indicated as well. Good luck!

Poor Bella! It definitely sounds like Bella is uncomfortable. The hard knot does not necessarily indicate organ enlargement, but it can be a mass or tense muscles from the pain. Abdominal pain in dogs has many causes, including pancreatitis, intestinal torsion, and obstructions. Given her level of discomfort, Bella should be seen by a vet right away. Your vet can perform x-rays and blood work to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. I hope this helps and that all is well with Bella!

Poor Luka! If she is in worse pain, yes take her into a vet immediately. I'm wondering if they have checked her uterus. I see that she isn't spayed, and a pyometra (a life threatening infection of the uterus) could be causing her symptoms. Please take her back into a vet now. Best of luck.
