My dog is restless and breathing fast on prednisolone. Benadryl?

While allergic reactions can reoccur it can be very difficult determine what is triggering them. It is very rare for dogs to develop life threatening anaphylactic reactions, and the biggest concern with an allergic reaction is swelling around the throat which does not happen often. I believe it might actually be part of the original allergic reaction but as there is suspicion he had a reaction to the Benadryl i wouldn't recommend giving it again. instead i would recommend to monitor him, give it 48 hours, if it is not resolved bring him back to the vet for a steroid shot.

While it could be an allergic reaction Benadryl can also cause sedation. With Koda's breed, age and heart murmur history it would be safest to have your veterinarian do an exam to make sure he isn't going into congestive heart failure. If that is not an option continue to monitor he breathing rate and effort and I do not recommend giving any more Benadryl as that could be artificially lowering his breathing rate through its sedative effects

Sometimes dogs can breathe rapidly/pant even though the tongue is not out and it could be related to the injectable corticosteroid, but if you think Simba is having trouble breathing or if he is unable to rest I’d recommend seeing an emergency vet. The medication should start helping 20-30 minutes after an injection but it might take a day or two until Simba is completely comfortable. I would be concerned that there is still swelling, potentially irritating the trachea or throat if Apollo is also now coughing and the hives haven't resolved after two days of home treatment. If this continues or worsens it would be best to seek veterinary care to have Apollo examined and treated with a strong medication to help stop the allergic reaction, especially if he is having swelling of the face or neck, or is having trouble breathing.
