My dog has a red spot on his scrotum post-neuter. What should I do?

The red discoloured area seems to only be a bruise in the skin. I would not be very concerned and it should go away on its own. Just like with bruises on our skin, though they are healing they can sometimes appear larger or darker first. Issues to watch out for which would indicate a problem and a need to return to the veterinarian; Swelling Redness which is getting much larger or darker very quickly Redness at the incision site Discharge Bleeding Foul order Pain behaviours - hiding, lack of interest in food Fever Vomiting or dirrhoea

If Tomy sat in something irritating, it may have lead to him licking and chewing at his scrotum. I would recommend getting a plastic cone and placing this around his head and using an ointment such as Sentry Wound Cream which can be found online or at your local PetCo. If the wound does not improve or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Tomy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! That appears to be a small scab and likely no cause for concern. The post op swelling is minimal and the bruising should be decreasing as well. Keep the e-collar (cone) on him and monitor for redness, swelling, bleeding or lethargy.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Riki. He appears to have small crusts or scabby lesions. This can sometimes represent a superficial skin infection. I recommend bathing him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula for puppies. Make sure that he is not licking the area. Place an E-collar on him if necessary. If this does not resolve the issue or the lesions spread, then he will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

I'm worried that Apollo is developing a hot spot. The area should be clipped and cleaned to prevent spreading. They will likely prescribe a topical antibiotic/steroid, but may also elect to send home some oral medication too depending on how deep the infection looks. If it gets redder, the incision appears open, and/or it looks infected, have him seen by a vet right away. Try to make sure the cone stays on at all times. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately it is hard to tell when we cannot see exactly where on the penis this purple spot is. If it is a round swollen area, then that would be the bulbus which swells during copulation and locks the penis in the vagina of the female. If people separate the two dogs rather than wait until they part themselves, this bulbus can get injured and the female can also get injured. It is not a good idea to let this male mate with the three females in heat as he will introduce bacteria into their vagina and possibly uterus and so could cause a uterine infection (pyometra). If you could take some good photos of your dog's penis, we could better assess the situation and give you a more specific answer.
