My dog has a red spot on his muzzle. What could this skin growth be?

This looks to be a histiocytoma. I don't think he needs a vet visit just yet. Often these will go away on their own. I would only be worried if it doesn't go away in a month or so OR if it grows larger OR if it starts to bother him. The photos are a bit grainy but I think what I am seeing is a lump that looks like a histiocytoma. It usually will go away on it's own within a few weeks to months. I suggest you leave it alone. Ouch! Due to how inflamed that looks I would definitely schedule a vet visit ASAP. Sudden growths/irritations like that can be due to a number of things including bacterial infections, tumors, irritation from digging/rubbing at the spot too much, allergies, etc so it's good to see your vet. They'll likely want to take a sample of the area to determine what is going on and how best to treat it. In the meantime, it's a good idea to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Nova to keep her from rubbing at the spot, as well as keep the area clean and dry. If the area is rapidly growing in size, taking note of the size, color, shape changes, etc can help your vet better determine what is going on. If you are noticing any other symptoms (sneezing, fever, loss of appetite, etc) these are important to let your vet know as well.

These are benign bumps that are button-like, red, and hairless that can be seen in young dogs. They usually go away on their one in 2-3 months. Sometimes they ulcerate as they regress. If it gets larger, starts bothering Sophie or doesn’t go away in 2-3 months then you should have Sophie looked at by a Vet. There are other skin masses that can look like that, some are benign but there are ones that are also cancerous. I hope this helps and I wish Sophie the best!

Hello. While it is impossible to make any kind of actual diagnosis, a lesion like this most likely has an underlying bacterial cause. We often see isolated & well circumscribed lesions on the top of the nose or muzzle just from the fact dogs stick their noses in dirt or other nasty things all day long. Putting anything on this is not recommended because he will lick it off. You can pick up a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens from any pharmacy & just dab this on a couple of times a day. Once your vet has a chance to look, he may put Luna on oral antibiotics, or take a small sample to look at under the microscope. Other than this, there is no need to worry too much about the lesion. If the spot has changed in size over time it wouldn't hurt to have your vet take another look at it, especially if the change was very rapid over the past few days or weeks. Your vet may recommend taking a sample of the spot for testing to help determine what it may be so it can be treated as needed. Growths like this can be caused by any number of things including rubbing the spot often on surfaces, cysts, blisters, allergies, etc, so having it examined if it is changing is best.
