Why does my dog have a red spot with a divet under her nose?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

My spayed female 3 year old (pit boxer lab? 65lbs) Has a red pink spot under her nose with a divet. Appointment set with vet but 5 days out. Wanted an opinion. No fluid leaking, no pain when area is touched, Simi hard lump, nothing on inside lip, no other spots appearing. appeared 12/18, reached current size 12/24. Has not increased or decreased in size. Dog behavior normal. Eating normal. No medication, no known health issues. Last visit for annual Oct/20.

Hello. While it is impossible to make any kind of actual diagnosis, a lesion like this most likely has an underlying bacterial cause. We often see isolated & well circumscribed lesions on the top of the nose or muzzle just from the fact dogs stick their noses in dirt or other nasty things all day long. Putting anything on this is not recommended because he will lick it off. You can pick up a skin antiseptic like Hibiclens from any pharmacy & just dab this on a couple of times a day. Once your vet has a chance to look, he may put Luna on oral antibiotics, or take a small sample to look at under the microscope. Other than this, there is no need to worry too much about the lesion. She could have hit her nose on something and the bump is related to trauma and will go away, it could be a benign growth (like a histiocytoma), it could be part of a skin infection or immune reaction, hives or a cancerous growth. If the bump doesn't resolve in a few days I recommend having your Vet look at it. The sores around her mouth can also be due to infection or an immune condition and may or may not be related to the new bump on her nose. I hope this helps and I wish Luna a speedy recovery!

Why does my dog have a red, scabbing, changing spot on her snout?

Hello. This looks like it might be an eosinophilic folliculitis & furunculosis. This is often seen on the snout or bridge of nose of dogs mainly because of how the dig & root around leaf litter & under bushes. The initial cause is usually a small sab wound from a sticker or thorn, or even a bug bite. Most often we need to do some cytology or even a small biopsy to identify what is actually going on. At the very least, Holly needs to be on oral & some topical medications, including antibiotics & possibly some steroids to reduce the inflammation. My dog's nose has a growing bumpy discoloration. What is it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The little area of discoloration is not necessarily anything to worry about. I see this commonly with time with dark skinned animals. As long as the skin does not seem irritated and the discoloration does not happen on the nose itself, I am inclined to just continue to watch it. Apply a dab of children’s sunscreen lotion before she goes outside to protect that area from sunburn. Best wishes to you and Luna!

My dog has a new spot on her nose. Should I worry or treat at home?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid rubbing/scratching if any. Why is my dog's nose blister-like patch not healing after antibiotics?

Based on the picture you have provided, it appears that this could be bacterial or a skin parasite causing the lesion. The skin may need to be cultured and if a skin scraping has not been performed, I would certainly recommend having this done to make sure this is not due to a skin mite such as demodex. If this is not due to a mite and is still there, I would recommend a culture / biopsy of the area for a more definitive diagnosis. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. My dog has a weepy, raised spot on her nose. What could it be?

This does look like a skin infection, but we cannot say whether it is bacterial or fungal. Your veterinarian may be able to tell with a quick exam and looking at the area with a special light that can diagnose ringworm fungal infections. In either case, this will be best treated with an oral medication....either antibiotic or antifungal. It is usually unrewarding to try to treat a lesion in this location topically because the dog will usually lick any cream or ointment right off. I would recommend that Neyle see her vet for a diagnosis.
