My dog has a red, inflamed spot or lump on its arm. What is it?

This appears to be a histiocytoma. If it is, it should resolve on it's own. ( https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952066 ) I suggest you just monitor it for the next month or so. If it does not resolve or it gets worse, then a vet visit would be warranted.

It could be a small cyst, pustule/papule, or possibly a Histiocytoma which is a benign mass that is common in young dogs. Since it is getting more red, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. The vet may want to aspirate it and examine the contents under a microscope. She may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, it may need to be removed, or just monitored (histiocytomas typically resolve with no treatment). You could use an over the counter spray, like Vetricyn, and see if that helps relieve any redness or discomfort.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). Unfortunately, the photo is very fuzzy and of poor contrast so I am unable to really make much of an assessment out of it. Best guess, it looks like it could have been a self-inflicted wound called a lick granuloma, but this would need to be confirmed by a vet to be certain. If the lesion is getting smaller and is non-painful to the touch, it may not be very concerning since it very well might be resolving on its own. If it is in fact a lick granuloma, the best thing you can do for it is clean it with dilute betadine or chlorhexidine solution, apply some triple antibiotic ointment to it daily, and make sure Eddie has a cone on so he can't lick the area to make it worse. However, the reality is, if you really want to know more information on the origin / cause of the lesion, you are going to need to have a professional take a look at that in person. Histiocytoma’s are benign growths on young dogs that are pink raised button like masses that can ulcerate. They tend to form more often on the limbs. They also tend to go away on their own in a few months. You can clean it and apply an antibiotic cream and prevent licking up see if it resolves. It it persists or grows I’d have your vet look at it. I'm not sure from the picture if it's just the mass the side a little bigger than your thumb nail, or if the entire 6 inch round area around the main bump is red. Either way, I would be worried about a growth first and then perhaps an insect bite if you've only noticed it today. Young dogs can have a type of mass called a histiocytoma that is benign and goes away on it's own eventually. I would recommend a vet visit if it's growing in size, just to be on the safe side.
