My dog has a red, sore spot after I removed a tick. What should I do?

A small amount of localized swelling and redness is a normal inflammatory reaction after tick removal. However, if the swelling and redness persists then you should have your vet take a look at it. You could clean the area with a wound wash and then apply a topical OTC antibiotic cream to the area. Make sure to use a good flea and tick prevention, NexGard, Bravecto, Credelio. Also, talk to your vet about vaccinating for Lyme disease is she isn't vaccinated. Monitor for any abnormal signs and talk your vet about yearly testing for tick borne diseases and heartworms.

Keep the area clean and dry. You can use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to clean the area daily. Tick bites frequently result in a red, raised area (tick bite granuloma) after the tick drops off or is removed. The good news is that they resolve on their own within a few weeks. Not all tick bites will cause disease, so just watch over the next 10 -14 days any signs of illness in Tobi. This would include lethargy, loss of appetite, reddened eyes. Take care.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jack. He will need to see his veterinarian this week. The wound will likely be cleaned and the surrounding hair shaved to further evaluate it. Regardless of the cause, he will likely require antibiotics. In the meantime prevent him from scratching the area. You may check his ears as well. Some dogs with ear infections will cause self trauma from scratching itchy ears. Check for any redness or debris in the ears. I hope this information helps!

You should clean it twice daily with boiled, warm water or 4% chlorhexidine (available over the counter at pharmacies). The spot should disappear within 5-7 days. However, if it is not getting better after a week, you should take Shemmy to your local vets to get an ointment with antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory agent.
